Steering wheel shake

Hi

My 2010 Gen2 12k miles Carrera 4 Coupe (non-PASM 19" wheels) has just been through a 111-pt check. I noticed on a test drive that the steering wheel could shake a little bit (nothing serious but a bit of shake at about 70 mph) such that you can see it if you take your hands off the wheel momentarily.

I did ask the OPC to check it out. They'd replaced a tyre and said it was a bit out balance. It doesn't seem to have cured it.

Just wondering, if (a) they all do this and I'm confusing good communication from the wheel with shake or (b) whether I should have the chassis tuned by someone like Center Gravity.

Any views?

I'd say almost definitely tyre related. Either wear or balance.

The best way to balance a wheel is to do it on the car. However as you have 4WD I'm not sure if it can be done :dont know:

Had similar problems years ago. Wheel balanced perfectly but when on the car got the shakes. Once it was balanced on the axle it was perfect. IIRC turned out to be a locking wheel nut that was not genuine spec and obviously a different weight.

No, they don't all do this! As ever, helpful suggestions quoted above. I would also add to check tyre pressures are evenly inflated all round to manufacturer's spec, all tyres are same brand and N-rating (as they should be coming from an OPC) and if possible, check the brake-pad wear too. If they're unevenly worn, then they will need replacing (same goes for brake-discs too) but I would have expected an OPC to cover these items before the car went on sale anyway.

Please keep us informed - I am especially intrigued by Zingari's experience as I would not have suspected a wheel nut could make quite a difference. However, experience rules I suppose.

I would have said wheel balance was out if you can drive through the shaking.
