I have just had my starter re-furbished as it was getting slow and was screeching almost every time I turned the key all for the bargain price of £42.

Not sure on the rules for putting the details of the company who done it in my post, if it's OK I will give their details.

Best bit other than the price was the quick turn round (dropped it off at 4pm with a faulty alternator from the wife's car and picked both up at 10am the next day), I did have to remove it and re-fit it though.
:D

At that price there can't be parts involved, more likely a clean and lube. Really wonder what they do, I have 2 here in need of some love but not sure where to start

A few years ago I refurbed the starter motor in my Supra with the help of a friend. As I remember, I bought the refurb kit from the local Toyota dealer which was a little packet of shims and various bits and was only 10-15 quid. Removing and refitting the starter motor was the hardest bit.

I did this about a year ago with an alternator, but my local specialist almost made me feel like I was doing the wrong by having it reconditioned at a cost of I think @£70 instead he wanted to fit a replacement at a cost of £350, I just couldn't see the point as usually starters and alternators are reconditioned anyway when you buy them as they want the old one back otherwise you pay a surcharge

So +1

I did the strip down, clean and lube on it the year before, it didn't make much difference.

They said the starters are basically bullet proof but there is a brass bush that wears and this is what causes the slow operation and screech.

Apparently it's similar to the starters used on VAG cars of the same age so it's a common problem.

I removed mine a few months ago and took it to start n charge in welling Kent. New bearing fitted and tested less than £50. Been perfect since.
Was a bit fiddly getting in and out however I don't have that embarrassing noisy any more
