Speed Camera Question

Just as my licence was about to become completely clean, I've got caught doing 40 in a 30. Again. I've been back to the road that I was caught on and the details are as follows. NO signs indicating speed limit for my entire journey from place of work to speed camera. Industrial area - no residential around. Does anyone know what the rules are regarding speed signage prior to camera? Or indeed whether there's any chance I can get off on this little technicality? Is there a default speed limit for that road environment.

Thanks

Unfortuantly Simon, I think you'll find that if there are no signs then the speed limit is 30mph.

Quite a few years ago, when the police use to pull you over and give you a friendly ticking off, instead of sitting in a van pointing a laser gun at you, I tried the same argument that there wasn't any signs saying 30mph. This is where he told me that its 30 unless indicated otherwise.

Those 30 mph zones may be illegal - are there street lights along the road you were caught on - if there are and they are less than 200 yards apart then it is a valid 30 zone - if the lights are more than 200 yards aprt then it is not a valid 30 mph zone - also signs are apparently required check out:

http://www.abd.org.uk/30.htm

Section 84(3) of the Act clearly states that, where a speed limit order under section 84(1) applies to a road, that road is not a restricted road. The exemption to the need for repeater signs applies only to a restricted road, not a road with street lights and a 30mph limit (except in Scotland). Thus a road with a 30mph speed limit imposed on it by an order under section 84(1) must have repeater signs, whether it has street lights or not. The absence of repeater signs is a clear breach of Direction 10, so the speed limit cannot be enforced (prior to 31st January 2003).

there is also a useful site and forum at
http://www.pepipoo.com/

and
http://www.abd.org.uk/index.htm

basically it depends on the street light spacing!

Those are two excellent sites there Toby -

Here are some more great links for bookmarking which have helped me to reduce my tax burden
... also convinced me that current legislature is causing road deaths by spending money and effort on tax-raising inititiatives that do not reduce the road death rate... - see "Increased Road Deaths Figures Demolish Darling's Camera Claims" on the ABD site -

I am currently looking for a site that covers the loopholes around bus lanes!

Cheers, Lawrence

Thanks a lot. That's really useful stuff. I'll be out there measuring the streetlamp distance tomorrow. Will let you know if I get off.
