I am looking for one of these but I am starting to think that they are made from a material similar to Dresden china!. :dont know: .can somebody reassure me?
.
Has anybody used one for trackdays..etc ??

Yes ... yes you can

I have done many track days in mine, plus a couple of amazing road trips.

The cars love to be driven as the were intended.

BUT

They are thoroughbreds. You need to get the cars up to temperature first. I am sure that 99% (not an official statistic) of the damage is caused by people who are not motor sensitive.

Ie

Revving from cold etc.

Yes (once you've checked all fluids are present and correct, and the car is properly warmed up first) :thumb:

i never drive min hard for the first 9/10 miles then the oil should be up to temp.... and then off you go

Respect is the key word mine has been tested to the limit with no problems :thumb:

Really ...???

Is this a serious question ???

It's a Porsche !!!!

As long as

1. it has had its IMS replaced with a ceramic joint (like my mother's knee)
2. It has had its oil changed every 350 miles with a lubricant that all members of this forum agree is entirely appropriate
3. that it either is, or isn't a Convertible / or Targa (the weight distribution makes them akin to a Transit/Plaxton 53 seater respectively, apparently)
4. all rust has been removed from under the sills (otherwise might result in explosive decompression)
5. AOS has been changed within last 3 days (or might blind following drivers)
6. CDR23 has been replaced with double DIN (or might result in terminal irritation)
7. Double DIN replacement has been effected with proper surround (or might result in terminal OCD)
8. Tip shift pattern has learnt to love you
9. Car has been driven properly to warm oil - ie. 3 1/2 minutes at <+4000rpm&<+50mph; 20m @ <+4750rpm & <75mph; 12.75m @ >4750 <5212 rpm & between 57 & 98.1 mph BUT if this routine is interrupted car MUST be allowed to cool down for 5.825 hours before restart and repeat
10. entire body has been wiped with Carnuba Wax before bed every night and PDF posted in the Members' Forum (that's the car's body)
11. Ignition switch has been replaced (or may never switch off)
12. Drain holes have had a good rodding (or may be mobile bath)
13. you have canvassed, on this forum, hoped for sale value at + 1/3 of likely sale value

That's about it.

Do enjoy

:)

Thanks for the replies, even the pee taking ones.(I enjoy the banter) :thumb: ..Its just that when you look around or even read the 996 FAQ's on this BB the consensus is generally not good....On the other side of the coin there are lots of cars that have had nothing more than routine servicing and gone on to cover big miles..It is reassuring that these cars can be used in anger if properly warmed up and maintained.I can and am happy to do this..its just a matter of whether the previous owners have had the same discipline!
I am searching around for cars and I almost need to pinch myself when looking at these when I see what you can get for the money, its incredible really.
In many ways I think the risk element is already factored into used prices and if the 996 engine had proven to be bulletproof then these cars could still have a starting price of 15-18k for early models and not 8k..and perhaps we would look back at the aircooled cars as old dinosaurs and not as still the" must have" that they appear to be..but that's probably a discussion for another day.

+1

They must be the greatest sports car manufacturer in the world.

Some gremlins aside, the performance per pound (new or used), with everyday reliability and useability requires their impact on democratising access to real sports car to be "weighed", not simply counted!

Why not attend a PCGB Club Championship race and see 996s get a proper thrashing?! The teams aren't rebuilding the engines every race - or even every season, and the regs prevent them from modifying the engine at all. If the cars were unreliable, do you think drivers would want to be wasting all that money on fees, fuel, etc if they didn't stand a pretty good chance of finishing?

Thrash :?:

Even on a track I think you'd struggle to actually thrash a 996.

If you're intention is to indulge in regular 'traffic light GP's' or hit the rev limiter in 2nd and 3rd at every opportunity, fair enough, but under 95% of road driving you'll be well within the limits of the engine.

Few people suffer from IMSB paranoia more than me but once the car has been warmed up properly I never think for one-millisecond that it's the way I drive it that will break it.

It's a lottery - and that's what compromises the whole 996 (and 997) Carrera ownership experience.

That said, for the money that you can pick these cars up for there is nothing that gives more  's per £.

Thrash ??

Hmm...

Dont over rev it though...

Or you will NEVER be able to sell it !!

I agree.

And don't forget to remove and test the rev-limiter LED. If this shows signs of ever having been lit:

WALK AWAY

I think, if they can't be 'thrashed' there isn't much point. Other cars have more comfort, rear legroom, carrying capacity & practicality so there has to be something to make it worthwhile to own apart from brand. Warm it up and thrash away :)
