My nephew has brought his 911 x reg round to me after having been charged nearly £1000 for changing its air box although i have been in the motor trade for many years i have never worked on a 911 the problem he is having is that when he strats it up it smokes very heavilly this has only started since the new air box has been fitted i have taken the air filter off and there is evidence of oil in the air box the garage that repaired ?? the car is not a porche garage

Hmmm, my 993 used to guff out loads of smoke when it was started. I was told that this was quite normal due it being a dry sump etc.

Have you spoken to the garage that did the work?

Hi Major

You get oil in the airbox and a lot of smoke if you over-fill the engine with oil. Did the non-Porsche garage also do a service at the same time. You should measure the oil level with the car warm and on a level surface.

Having said that, due to the design of the engine it is common for a puff of smoke on start up but it should not continue.

Puff of smoke on startup _is_ normal, but continuing smoke may indicate worn valve guides, a common problem with Carreras and earlier. Monitor oil consumption. If you have to add a quart of oil more than every 600 miles or so you have a problem. I had to add a quart every 300 miles in my 88 Carrera and just had a top overhaul done: worn valve guides, rocker arms and two bent valve stems.

Checking oil: the engine should be at normal operating temperature, and you need to leave the engine running while you check it. Do not drop the dipstick into the oil tank ...

Does it smoke from both tips or just the left ??

I think the car and/owner are now dust.

Ha ha ha ,, I see what I've done

Damn, I meant to put this thread in a time capsule and reply in 10 years.
