Sat Nav/GPS Speedtrap detector

Hello,

I want to install both, but want as few gagets as possible cluttering up the interior of the car, so I wondered if there wasn't one unit that does a really good job of combining the two functions -

I looked at the Origin b2 - features include "GPS NMEA output (optional lead required) so unit may be used in conjunction with PDA/mapping software to provide cheap navigation solution" (doesn't sound like they are very confident, is it any good?)

I guess the alternative is to get an entertainment system that includes SatNav, and then a seperate Speedtrap detector -

Any suggestions or experiences welcome.

Hi Lojo,

I haven't used the Origin unit, but from my experience with other devices like the Raod Angel, I honestly believe that you need to have both a GPS based unit for SPECs etc, and a "proper" Radar / Laser detector like a Bel, Valentine one or a higher end Snooper.

I had the lasar attachment on my Road Angel and it failed to go off when a copper pointed a gun at me, my Bel on the other hand went crazy!

Full protection = GPS Unit / Radar Detector / Radar Diffuser!

Agree with James you need GPS and proper radar/laser. Ive got two seperate units and theyve both saved me once or twice when the other wouldnt have.

There is a new radar/laser thing out that clips over your rear view mirror and is quite highly rated on

. Called a Cheetah I think. That might be a good way to go and then look for a combined GPS sat nav /speed thing.

I'm sure I remember reading somewhere recently that one of the satnav bits of kit can also do Gatso warnings. I'll have a sniff about (having done all this research recently!).

Ive had a very quick look into this. Seems you can buy a PDA with TomTom navigation kit and then run TrafCam software at the same time.

However, the different options etc etc are totally bewildering!

Has anyone gone at this from the PDA route? The cost seems to compare favourably with seperate bits of kit.

I am seriously considering going the PDA route as you do get the benefit of having sat nav from your investment. I have found a gps adaptor RoyalTek that is only about the size of a 50p piece.

I have used Tom Tom Navigator on my PDA and have been very impressed with it. The only fault is that the speaker in my HP5450 is not loud enough to hear the voice commands so you also need to invest in a powered PDA mount with a built in amp or try and wire it into your head unit somehow. Tom Tom also allows you to load points of interest (POI) databases into it and it will show these on the map - there are speedtrap POI's available and these work quite well. However, to get verbal speadtrap warnings you ned to buy software that runs in tandem with Tom Tom.

For simplicity though, I don't think you can beat something like Road Angel.
