I've been out again looking at 911's I've seen a car that seems to be sound apart from a rust hole buy the door catch. Does anybody have any idea how much it costs to repair.

Also the car has been looked after by Autofarm(are they any good?), it also needs 6000 mile servicea. Costs any one.

Regards

Colin

For servicing, it depends on which model you're looking at - this link will give you an idea of costs relative to each model

As for the rust, ifI were looking at a car that an owner had allowed rust to perforate a structure like the B post, I'd be concerned as to what else they had let slip.

There are plenty more out there, you just have to look.

To quote myself from an earlier thread:

"As regards buying the first one you see - I nearly fell into this trap but when I first went for a look I purposefully took no money with me.

On returning the next day with cash and a good mate as devils advocate, the gorgeous looking immaculate beast I'd seen aday before turned out to have had at least two crap resprays,a new front offside corner, some dodgy welding and a car full of electrical gremlins.

As the song says,"Walk on by......."

One other thing I ended up considering was to take along a dictionary to show vendors what " clean " and " immaculate " really mean as some folk obviously don't have the same definitions as the rest of us!

Good Luck and Caveat Emptor

Andy is right.

Any rust there is evidence of forther rust elsewhere, look at teh kidney bowls, jacking points, silss, headlamps, top of inner front inner wings where they meet the outer wing, seat pans, rear parcel shelf, bottom corners of the rear and front windscreens, etc. etc.

How old is the is car?

The car is a 84 LHD, I checked as far as a could and could find no other rust. The other door catch was fine. The car it self has been looked after by Autofarm (that why I asked the question about them, they think it will cost about £1000 to sort out the rust) for the last 5 years and has a german main dealer history before that. On a slightly differnet note, if you take the oil filler cap of when the engine is running, what if anything should be the effect. The reason I ask the question is , i did the above on 2 911's today and one did do anything , but the other almost made a chuffing noise from the filler pipe( I assume that is bad!!!)

Have a look at these pictures of an 85 Targa

The rust on the inner wings is almost impossible to detect without removing the front wings.  Just a warning![/P

So Nick it would appear that on the basis of the pictures above any porsche could have these problems and even a PPI wouldn't show them up.

Is it a case of pot luck?

it's seems that the car you are looking at didn't need a PPI to find a hole in the door closing panel. That should warn you that there may well be other rust that may not be so easy to find.

I did an amateur PPI on an '85 3.2 on Saturday for my brother, and it is possible to get your fingers (just) into the small gap on the inner wing that shows the rust above, that is not the car I looked at Saturday by the way.

You have to jack the car up so there is room to get your arm between then tyre and the arch, then sqeeze fingers over the oil cooler pipes. It would have been possible to feel the rust shown above, but to identify it before it gets that serious would be tricky

It's the same with the headlamp bowls and the top corners of the rear wing/inner wing. I just wish there was a surer way of finding rust.

Everyone will advise you to buy the best you ca, one that has been washed regularly underneath would be a real find, but any car below £10K is going to be a bit of a lottery.
