I've just fitted these to my 993, bought from the ever helpful Gert at Carnewal.

I have a slight problem with them;

Inside, the car sounds very boooooomy at anything up to 3500rpm (like the outside of a Subaru). I don't have any holes drilled in my airbox.

At idle, and when you put your foot down, they sound gorgeous.

But at crusing Motorway speeds, there's a real low loud boooom.

Anyone else had these fitted and do you find the same problem?

Thanks in advance,

Not with mine - no boooom in fact at first I thought they were too quiet. Talk to Gert he's a good chap.

Mine was loud below 3000 rpm-ish, then not much louder than normal above that. Not so much a boom but a nice low level rumble. I guess it depends on what rev you cruise on the motorway, I normally cruise @3500-4k rpm, so no boom for me!

You might find that as they coke up a bit, the resonance may improve.

Not heard of anyone complaining of a boom in the RSRs, so if it persists, swap for another set from Gert.

No Boom with mine, either now or when fitted 5k miles ago. Like Stevo, I initially thought they were a bit quiet.

Spoken to Gert - he doesn't understand it either. Maybe it's my ears. Put another 60 miles on today and the boom is slightly less, so Robert's coking up theory makes sense.

Please don't let me put off potential customers to Gert - the mufflers sound superb and are great value.

I think that rather than a deep rumble inside the car, I was expecting it to be more 'Italian' sounding and crackly.

Mine have got louder from when I had them fitted ! Not much.. but a bit.

The Americans (from where the RSRs originate) like a bassy rumble... I had a Tubi (also very popular in the US, in fact a dealer fit over there) on an F355 and that too was very bassy, with the most awful resonance (I took it off in the end, I really couldn't stand it). The Capristo system on the other hand, made in Germany, was much better sounding on an F355, a real motorcycle/F1 like howl, with spits and crackles on the over-run but specifically with no boom... lovely.

My point is, maybe (and I'm with you on this) you want to hear more 'engine' and less exhaust- so maybe you should look to tweaking the induction?

Alternatively, trundle along to Hayward and Scott, or Milltek, and describe exactly what you are looking for... perhaps they know how to modify one of their systems to achieve your aim.

I wonder if Capristo make a system for the 993... I'll have a look. Edit: no they don't.

Try a set of stick-on holes for the air filter cover - the noise improves as you floor it and go up the rev range.

It looks like you were trying to drill a shape of mickey mouse out, and it all went a bit wrong...

Stevo, thanks for this, Gert says that drilled holes in the airbox cover may actually give MORE bass and resonance.

That's what I'm after!

Sadly, I suspect that to achieve that Kim, you might need a new car!

Robert, that's funny but I think you might be right!

I think I'll just have to get used to it as I've made a mistake of selling my Porsches in the past and have always lived to regret it.

My neighbour has a carrera 4S with the exhausts that you can make louder from the dashboard, and that sounds very F1.

Mind you, the car cost her over £55,000...

You're right- stick with the Porsche. The problem with the Ferrari was that you hear the full 'F1 howl' in the first three gears, and you are probably going fast enough for a prison sentence, and not an especially involving car at legal road speeds. Also, it had a confounded bypass valve which meant it sounded decidedly ordinary below 3-4k rpm.

Its a shame some bright spark hasn't come up with a switchable exhaust for the 993... it wouldn't be rocket science to put in a little remote-operated flapper valve?

Those bright sparks at Ruf have come up with such a thing - just be sitting down when you see the price.
