RMS failure conspiracy theory...

The cynic in me is beginning to wonder about the RMS issue-

I was told by a Porsche specialist that there is RMS leaks and RMS leaks, i.e. a few drips vs vs oil puddles. The former doesn't need fixing and the latter does. The RMS leak is down to an inherent design and manufacture fault, and even if the seal is replaced, is likely to go again. In his view it isn't a big deal at all on the whole apart from a few cases where there is a severe leak in which case a new engine is probably the only long term answer...

Have dealers and specialists cottoned on to the general hysteria about RMS failure, and realised that RMS repair is a nice little earner for them, and are, dare I say it, doing work that is not really necessary in most cases?

I thought the latest version of the seal is meant to do the trick and fix the problem. I'm sure Seagull said that.

Other than that, I don't know why they would want to publisise the problem any more than they have to. I suppose they get the money from the warranty - so it would be a good earner for them. I am inspecting the car when I see it, as I have not seen any oil being leaked onto the drive.

For service only firms possibly, but would'nt the economics suck if you were a seller of cars too? The few hundreds gained would be far outweighed by the multi thousand devaluations of the cars concerned

just my two penneth

My understanding (which isnt brilliant) of an RMS leak is unless it is really bad you wouldnt see any oil on the floor! Its gets caught on some type of cover or something

good points there

one does wonder if they all now use 'RMS' as a means ........

Right - so I do have an RMS. It is only the third tip that they have ever done at Solihull. So not that frequent then. Apparently it takes an age to do. Glad about the warranty and hopefuly this latest version of the seal will fix the problem all together.

Booked in to be done in a few weeks!
