Help! Bought a second hand 996 cabriolet 2 years back and have had some minor nicks and went to Charles Ivey in Fulham. Found them unhelpful and seemed very steep on the cost side...so off to the main Porsche Centre where at least I had some recourse and first impressions were fine. Then the drama started, everytime i took the car back to get it looked at there were all sorts of things going on. Classic question "There is oil leaking from your car..do you want us to investigate" before you know it £1,500 clocked up yet again..."Its the labour sir"!

Anyone able to tell me if it really costs £630 + VAT to replace rear main & Intermediate oil seals???????????????? or am i getting taken to the cleaners?

I reckon i have left clost to £8,000 with these guys over the last 18 months (includes new suspension front, brakes in the front and new clutch among other things).

Any thoughts much appreciated

That's about right for an RMS change. If you get the clutch done at the same time it saves you some money. RMS is covered under the extended warranty if you have it.

If you don't have a warranty you should go to an indie to get this done. I know some chanre as little as £350 for an RMS change. I understand there are a few good ones in London.

Kay,

from what I've seen on here the cost for replacement of seals sounds about right.

I guess from your description you didn't buy from an OPC or dealer in the 1st place. Did you get the car inspected before you bought? Sounds also like you have no warranty on the car as otherwise the seals would have been replaced under warranty. Brakes & Clutch would not have been covered under warranty unfortunately. From what you describe it seems like your car had had a tough life before you bought it. I think the problems reside more with the car than the dealers to be honest, although the dealers will not be cheap. On the basis it's not under warranty suggest you shop around for some of the other independents who will be cheaper for you. Some of the other guys can give you an idea but a couple of examples are Northways near Reading or JZ Mactech in north London.

Hope things go better for you in the future as they are great cars.

If Surrey is within reach of home-base then GT One in Chertsey have a good rep. as do Camtune in Godalming.

I live about 15mins from Charles Ivey I would never ever take my car there. Only came in useful once when I had a dead battery and needed a charged spare.

JZ Machtech don’t charge for finding faults or have a go mechanics. Know there stuff don’t mess about very professional. They have my trust and recommendation

True OPC story, made me laugh -

I took my G/F's Boxster for a service to the local OPC last month, service guy comes out and says "there is a problem with the bulkhead drainage holes being blocked, we need to clear them out or water will be trapped and rust will set in. Cost £45"

I think "so you lifted the bonnet and found a leaf in the engine bay" and I say "Nevermind, skip that and I will clear it myself later."

So they did it free anyway as a favour.... :?

Kay, unfortunately these guys make far more money from threatening clients with dire results of not spending money with them then they probably do selling cars. Definitely find someone local who is a specialist who you can trust. If you say where you are in London then you will get loads of comments and personal recommendations and warnings.

I will start with Charles Ivey - stay away.

JZM - really good but a pain to get to.

I've been quoted over £2K to have the seals replaced on a Boxster by the Porsche dealer in Guernsey. Does that also sound slightly unrealistic???
