Car will be back on the road 1st May. When can I apply for a tax disc, in advance, to run from this date?
I've done some research and some are saying after the 15th of each month but you are not allowed to display until 1st of next month.
Any help appreciated.

IIRC it is after 15th of the preceeding month :dont know: Your dilemma might be the issue of being on a SORN up until the first day of the month you want it taxed as applying in the previous month may back date to the first of the month.

The whole VED system is flawed. When I bought my 964 it was on a SORN by the previous owner. I went to update the SORN (says a new owner must do it) and couldn't do it online as the site told me I had to go to the nearest office. Yeh right I'm expected to take a day off work, queue up with the great unwashed to tell them the car is off road and being restored :pc:

I decided to ignore it given that I could physically attend the office and wait for them to contact me. They didn't so when the time came to put it on the road I went to the post office and taxed it :thumb:

So how are DVLA supposed to enforce SORN policy then??? The issue and governance around issuing a tax disc must cost more than the money they receive so the sooner it goes and is tracked via DVLA database the better.

Well I've tried this morning and no joy, system is stating licence start 01 04 2013. My SORN isn't due yet so could this be the problem?

The 15th thing is when you have a tax disc already, as it doesn't matter.

When you don't have one you had to get it on the day (they would let you the day before) remember the days of lonq queues at Post Offices and DVLA licensing centres, armed with sheafs of paper for Insurance, MOT, log book, V62s and V14s, where you were turned away if the pen had gone out of the box or you used the wrong shade of ink.

Nowadays its almost academic whether you display it or not, the records are computerised so they know if its licenced or not.

Just apply for it on the 1st of May online then display the disc when you get it through the post :thumb:

You've got a few days grace if you do it that way now.

You'd think it would be in the DVLA's interest to allow people to apply for the tax discs online in advance of their starting date and just not post them out until a couple of working days before that date. :dont know:

They could also include a printable, dated "confirmation of online payment" box which the applicant could print out and temporarily put in his tax disc holder in the event of the disc not arriving in time for the first of the month by post.

I suppose that would just be too easy. :?

You crazy kid, get out of here with your common sense!

After trawling DVLA's site, poor, I found this:

When to apply
If your vehicle tax or SORN is due to run out at the end of the month, you can renew it from the fifth day of that month.
If your vehicle is not taxed, or has a SORN with more than one month left to run, and you want to tax your vehicle:
n you cannot apply for a tax disc more than two working days before you want it to start, and
n if you do apply before then, your tax disc will be backdated to the start of that month.
DVLA= :thumbdown:

Seems okay to me, not sure what the problem is? You can drive your car happily without the tax disc in, so long as it's been applied for on-line.

My problem is that my current Insurance runs out 28th April and I'm swapping provider.
I think what I will do is get the Insurance next Tuesday and hopefully that will give plenty of time for the MID to update. This will then, fingers crossed, allow the processing of the disc application online go smoothly.

Right, I see now. Probably just as easy to queue up in the post office, who are you insuring yourself with?
