Next time your car goes in for a service, when you get it back, if you've got a torque wrench, check the wheelnuts are correctly tightened. If you haven't got a torque wrench, buy, beg, borrow or steal one.

Being bored today, I decided to do a wheels off wheel clean. I discovered that whilst two wheels were ok, the nuts on one of the others had been done up so tight that I had to put my full weight on the brace ie both feet off the ground to get them to move. Scarily, the nuts on the last wheel were tightened no more than a quarter of a turn beyond finger tight!

The wheels have not otherwise been off the car for any reason this year since it was serviced by a London independent in spring who has previously enjoyed several good write ups on this forum, so draw your own conclusions. This is something I will always check in future now.

All wheels now back in place, cleaner than clean things and correctly torqued up. I also have a new found respect for those who prepare their cars for concours competitions. Three and a half hours to clean four wheels!

Nighty night.
