Rear Seat Belts in an '85 Carrera Targa?

I've had a good look around Rennlist, Pelican etc. for info. on fitting 3-point rear seatbelts into a 911 that currently has lap (2-point) belts.

Seems that on '85 cars there will be a fixing point for the shoulder strap, but it's not clear what needs to be done to fit it.

Anyone able to point me in the right direction for info please?

Thanks.

There was an article in 911& Porsche World earlier this year (haven't got it to hand so can't tell you the month !) about fitting 3 point rear belts in an '89 964 - As far as I can tell it should be exactly the same for an '85 3.2 . Be aware that it does require some careful cutting of trim and rear parcel shelf - but it is certainly do-able. Try the 911& Porsche World website for the issue details, let me know if you can't find it and I'll try to dig it out for you.

Jamie,

Thanks for the quick response. Would it have been in the July edition in the "Project 964 update" section?

If this looks right I will order a back issue.

Phil.

BTW I bought an '85 Carrera Targa Sport yesterday. Pick it up tomorrow...can't wait.

Congratulations on your purchase . :D

Give us the details!

Picked up the car earlier today from about 20 miles away - back with no problems in a mix of A road and gridlock. No overheating probs, brakes sound, no wierd noises.

The car is a Crystal Green Carrera 3.2 Targa Sport, '85 model with electric half-leather sport seats, very smart Fuchs alloys (originals, refurbished) and has still got the toolkit! Option list matches what's on the car and its got mostly main dealer history, plus a couple of other specialists.

May be tempting fate but it seems like a good one. All electrics work except the electric mirrors - will check the fuses tonight and see in the morning if the de-misters work.

It's done 109,800, but if you said half of this it would be believable. Only thing is that the gearbox is a bit slow 1st to 2nd unless revs are over 3,000 when you change. May be a feature of 915 boxes (anyone know?) but the synchros seem OK; no problems with downshifts.

I think I'm going to like it :D
. Another big plus is my wife loves the car too.

So far so good! Glad to hear it is running as it should. At 109,800 miles it is barely run in! It sounds like you have found one that has been well looked after. Well done.

The 915 gearboxes are notoriously "sloppy" but they respond well to a) Swepco oil and b) correct adjustment of the linkage bushings etc. There is an article here that desribes how to adjust it:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_shifting_improvements/911_shifting_improvements.htm

There are a load of other technical articles you might find useful at the same place:

Hope this helps.

Thanks James for the pointers to pelicanparts.

I was convinced that the Targa top would leak, given the age of the car, but it doesn't.

For anyone in SE England caught in the downpour/thunderstorms Sunday p.m. it was a good test of seals - it was absolutely tipping down.

Went out to the car when the rain stopped expecting to need a bucket to sort it out but, yippee, dry as a bone. Then couldn't resist starting it up and going for a quick blast on the A3.

I will look at the linkage bushings etc. but it seems to be getting better. It's not just me getting used to it (although this plays a part) so I expect it's been standing around for too long recently.

Anyway an oil change (gearbox and engine) and a service is first on the list just to be on the safe side

You really did find a good one! A targa that doesn't leak... I didn't know there was such a thing. Very well done.

Hi folk

It seems this thread has taken a bit of a tangent, but back to the rear seat belts, I have the article from 991&PW scanned (which I did for a friend), so if anyone wants a copy, please email me on postmaster-at-my911.net

cheers

Thanks for the offer.

I've already got a copy of the article (and ordered the parts from the supplier mentioned in the article).

Maybe it will be of interest to others though.

Rgds. Phil.

Drat and double drat.

PH Sportscars very efficiently sent me the 3-point belt kit today.

On taking the parcel shelf off it is clear that the panel they sent is from a 964 - has the cutout for the rear wiper motor that's not on a Carrera 3.2 (wiper on the engine cover lid). It won't fit!!! Slightly different shape.

To make matters worse I can't find the threads for the seatbelts that should be there. A call to Porsche GB told me that UK spec cars did not have the threads/strengthening until 86 MY. The confusion is that some '84 and onwards RoW cars (not UK) had the threads.

Anyway, they recommended NOT trying to fit the belts as the bulkhead is not strong enough. Their recommendation was to fit the 2-point belts, as these passed the (albeit less stringent in those days) safety approvals.

I hope this will be of help to others and that it will save a load of time.

Separately, about 8 inches inboard of where the inertia reel unit would have been fitted is a bolt with a bracket on it - one on each side. This bracket had a metal clip attached with some 1.5in. webbing that had been cut. On the parcel shelf there is an outlet for these straps just forward of where the speakers are (I had assumed this cut out was something to do with the speakers).

Does anyone know what this could be? Neither Porsche GB or AFN Guildford had an answer. My guesses are either a) some sort of luggage restraint device, b) brackets for 4-point racing harnesses (unlikely, car is stock and there's no reinforcement around the bolts or c) some sort of child harness.

Waiting for PH to call me back about returning the parts they sent - shame I? ripped all the packaging to bits in my eagerness to see what they had sent :(
.

Phil.

What a pain! Easy mistake for them to make (I suppose?) but annoying for you. Will you be fitting 2 point belts instead now then?

Looks like a couple of posts in this thread have gone missing. One:

WRT the brackets you refer to:

"Separately, about 8 inches inboard of where the inertia reel unit would have been fitted is a bolt with a bracket on it - one on each side. This bracket had a metal clip attached with some 1.5in. webbing that had been cut. On the parcel shelf there is an outlet for these straps just forward of where the speakers are (I had assumed this cut out was something to do with the speakers)."

The rear bulkhead in my '76 Carrera 3 has similarly positioned threaded mountings that take a shallow 'U' braket (2cm deep, 6 cm long approx). These bolt on through the rear parcel shelf trim and I have seen many people attach either 3 point rear or 5 point front harnesses to them.

Can you post some pictures for a closer comparison?

Al G.

Will send another post later, once I've downloaded an image of what's there.

I now have the car booked into Quickfit Safety Belt Service, Stanmore (they advertise in 911 & Porsche World) on Monday for some harnesses to be properly fitted. They will cost approx. GBP150.00 for a 4-point harness that will take children up to about 12 years of age.

The woman on the phone seemed very knowledgable and has suggested that the bracket/webbing is for luggage straps and that there's no way they should be used on their own for attaching a harness as there's no reinforcement.

Al, thanks for agreeing to try and work out what the straps are for.

Image can be viewed via this URL:

http://photos.freeserve.com/album/album_fullsize.html?c_photo=1836488

Tried to upload the image, but doesn't seem possible from freebieserve - get what you (don't) pay for I suppose.

The actual brackets are located underneath the speakers (didn't have time to remove the shelf this morning) and you can see one of the exit points just in front of the speaker. I have included both straps in the one image. Note that these straps have both been cut and they were left attached to the brackets.

Bracket is attached to a bolt that's not dissimilar in size to a seat belt bolt and this is attached to nut underneath i.e. visible in the engine compartment. No reinforcement around it, just a clean hole through the metal.

Will try and get confirmation from Quickfit SBS on Monday, but in the meantime any other theories will be most welcome.

Thanks.
