Rear fog light

I have just changed my halogen dipped beams for 43000K HID's and when checking all my lights were still working with no issues I noticed the near side rear fog light was not working...Bulb I thought so nipped into Halfords and got a new bulb. When I removed the old bulb it looked in perfect condition, still replaced it with the new bulb and it still did not work! Done a search on here for "fog light" and found a post that informed me that the 996 only ever had one fog light wired up :x and the fix to get them both working is to run a live feed wire from the other side into the non working side (why is a bulb installed if it's not live :?:)

Anyone have a 'how to' so that I can have both working?

Yep, just one fog light on the offside. But the wires, holder and bulb are there on the nearside!! I recently wired in my nearside as follows:

1: Remove offside rear light
2: Snip the two wires entering the back of the fog light holder and strip back the four wire ends you end up with (two from the loom, two from the back of the fog light holder)
3: Use a pair of junction blocks to re-establish the connections
4: Slip a new pair of wires of similar gauge into the blocks (either end will do)
5: Remove the black protective strip running across the rearward lip of the engine bay (4 or 5 screws)
6: Run the new wires in the gulley that this exposes, across to the nearside rear light
7: Remove the nearside rear light
8: Snip the two wires entering the back of the fog light holder and strip back the wire ends still connected to the fog light holder
9: Use a pair of junction blocks to establish a connection to the two wires that you've just run across from the off side fog light, making sure to get them he right way around! Wrap the blocks in electrical tape to protect.
10: Re-fit the rear lights and protective strip, making sure to tuck the junction blocks in behind them, and test!

And voila! You'll have two working rear fog lights operated using the same switch on the dash.

There will undoubtedly be neater and slicker ways to do this but my setup works fine and was very straightforward to install!! :thumb:

IMO a single fog light is the best way to go, there is no need for two and the chance of people mistaking them for brake lights is high causing traffic to congest.

A single light will still be seen in dense fog and will be less dazzling when you decide to use it in light rain, heavy rain or any other situation when you want to use it but the visibility is not reduced. :x :x :x :x :x

@pj_sibley Thanks for taking the time to write that up, very helpful :thumb:

@infrasilver I prefer 2 fog lights and as it's there I would like it working (just my OCD)

Because the rear light sets of the 996 are otherwise identical for LHD and RHD cars, and installing one redundant bulb per car at OEM prices is cheaper than setting up and maintaining assembly line logistic systems for two "versions" and still having to rectify the situation when a parts-picker or assembly-line worker occasionally gets it wrong in spite of a system being in place.

The Japanese have a word for it: "poka-yoke". It's usually translated as "mistake-proofing", but in everyday English we might be more inclined to say "making it fool-proof". :)

German efficiency in practice.

...... as learnt from Japanese production engineering consultants. :)

Rear fog lights.....the work of the devil, and people who use them when not needed (99% of the time) the spawn of Satan, I doubt I have needed to use them more than 10 times in 30 years of driving !!!
IMO 2 rear fogs is downright dangerous, all it does is completely take your eye off the brake lights, just my opinion, as for middle aged men in Mercedes driving with sidelights and front fogs on !!!! WTF is that all about?

Totally agree, the only person needing a foglight in fog!! is the last person in the que too, not every car

I am in the same boat as Johnny in only using MY fog lights a few times in many years as I only use when visibility is really bad, which is something I can't say for others who put theirs on in a slight mist which p's me off. But saying this I still prefer to have 2 fog lights as I feel I am identifiable as a car and not a bike.

Im pretty sure the reason the fog light is on the offside is so that does not happen, IE no-one would undertake a bike on a foggy road but it still leaves 2 brake lights totally seperate.

Are you sure? with some of the idiots I see every day I'm not
