To all you Agony Aunts out there...

I have been in a relationship with my new 993 for a while now and it's incredible - we were clearly meant for each other, look fabulous together (especially reflections in shop windows) and people often say "phwoaa!!" when we go out together. Sometimes they see her and yell out to me something like, "You lucky banker!" which is strange because I am not in finance.

Even though she has a bit of a drink problem (1 lire for every 1000kms) and has expensive taste in optional extras, if I handle her gently she goes like a rocket especially well in, ahem, corners. There's no other for me in my life right now although I keep having strange dreams about her bigger sister "TT" but that's another story.

Anyway, my question is this - I was thinking of taking her on a ski trip and I mentioned she may have to consider wearing a roof rack. Well, she completely flipped out and said she'd rather sit in a showroom wearing furry dice! She even accused me of treating her like a "People carrier" and the next thing would be taking her to Sunday boot fairs to use her to sell my home made Apricot chutney collection.

So, please tell me if am I committing a serious social faux pas by asking her to wear a roof rack, will people laugh and point at her, me?

If not, where can I get one and how much does it cost? If yes, then I will happily give her a full body wax and say sorry.

Confused,

TJ

The reason you can fit a roof rack to a 911 is only for skis so tell her to to zip it! IMO there can be nothing cooler than heading off in a 933 with the ski's strapped to the roof (in winter of course) 8)

Classic post... :floor: :floor: :floor: :floor:

That has to be an entry for post-of-the-year awards (if there is such a thing?)

As for the ski-rack - how much cooler is it possible to look than a couple of pairs of skis on a 911... 8) 8) 8)

Hi Joe !
See 911's (including 993's and 964's) with roof racks all the time round here...IMO they look 1000% times better than the monster truck Cayenne Crew following round behind them.

The roof rack you are after is part number: (I think)

993 801 055 02

not sure you can get it from an OPC so may be back order from Germany

as for oil consumption, that is normal and happens with 0W40 oils more, but if the weather is going to be cold then these cold weather oils are better

tell her it is body art, that all the cool kids do it these days, and that she is showing her age by being so unreasonable about it.

I am guessing she is worried that her current rack is inadequate, hence your desire to increase the size of her rack to satisfy your needs.

do it! do it! and enjoy the twisty roads. I took my 993 carrera last year to Courchevel, and awsome! Nowadays i take my TT surfing all the time too.

And this Xmas, we are planning snowboarding in Scotland...guess who's there? yes, our beautiful TT.

If you check page3 of the 993post, you can see my old 993 carrera w/ the surfboards on.

Sorry no pictures of last Xmas snowboarding in the Alps.

DO IT! DO IT!

note: I use THULE roofracks (clamps and bars). You can get a setup from Halford for real cheap, like £100

Dear Aunties,

Many thanks for your advice and support, it has helped me clarify my thinking on this delicate subject. I am confident she will now accept the benefits of a nice rack, especially since 911 thrashers example allows me to show her that she can be both a snow and beach bunny.

Special thanks to sundeep for his consistent technical support and wagonface for realising the deeper meaning of all this.

Yours,

TJ

I agree with all the others on here - a ski rack on a Porsche is the height of cool.

However, coolest ski transport i have ever seen is this little beauty, from Courchevel a couple of years ago:
(the image is a bit poor quality, but you can see how the skis are being carried.)

Now that is definitely cool 8)

I doubt if anyone beat that...

Wow I've never seen a DS cab :dont know:

oh and you guys are gonna jump at me...but all i did to prepare for the Alps was get 4 brand new tyres...more thread is always better for wet roads...and "tyre socks" in case of snow: and guess what i had to use them, and they worked really good.

I probably drove 70-90 miles in the snow with them in the two weeks we were in Courchevel last Xmas. As long as you drive between 20-40mph without slowing down uphill you are all good with the "sox" on!

I found them super usefull, cheap and easy to put on: my 993 would have never taken chains on (way too low).

TJ

I have a 'soft roof rack' that goes on any car, just checked on mine and its fine. I have had a 9'6 long board on there so skis will be a piece of piste (sorry).

:redcard:

TheCock: i've never seen your car on the Bmouth car park on early wkend surf days...maybe this wkend? looks like we'll get a little swell. I should drop by sunday morning ;)

Or the reef, if it dares work!

btw be careful with soft racks: i used one before getting the Thule...and they are no good for long distance: w/ the wind not only they tend to whistle but they also scratch the roof paint!
