Hi Everyone

I have owned a 996 in the past and I'm looking to go air cooled :-)

I'm looking to buy a 993 privately from a good friend of mine. I trust my friend completely and he is giving me first refusal on the car before advertising it. He just told me the car has 9 previous owners. :o Thats around 1 owner every 2 years. Should I walk away or is that not an issue with a car of this age?

I don't mean to offend anyone, just looking for some friendly advice :-)

Many thanks in advance

Its quite a lot of owners but it isnt necessarily something that should make you avoid the car.

You want to see a wedge of bills for ongoing maintenance and repairs over the years (look through the thread son here to see some common issues).

It would also be worth getting it checked over by an expert (independent or OPC) before parting with your cash if you are seriously considering it.

There will be others much more qualified than I on here that can add more detail I'm sure

I agree that it's no great shakes.

It's quite common for sports cars to change hands a lot.

Judge the car on its merits and check out the history as advised above.

It's not that unusual.

Remember, also, at one time if you put a private plate on a car and then changed it back, that would count as two changes.

Doesn't happen now, but it would account for some of the changes when the car was newer.

Wouldn't worry about it as there is some reverse logic. Think about when you buy a car you tend to look after it in the early period of ownership, the longer you have it things tend to slip - ie some cases where long standing owners have not bothered with an annual service because thery have done so few miles etc.

Performance cars tend to change hands frequently in the early years

Buy on condition :thumb:

Agree with Zingari. My car is also a 9 owner car bought from one of the big Independents in 2009.
After my initial alarm, I concluded its not really an issue. Condition and documentation are important.

Glad I can rely on your knowledge. Thank you everyone, really appreicated!

I have never got hung up on the amount of owners, without looking I honestly could not tell you how many owners my 993 has had. In fact apart from when I sell a car and put this info in the ad, I never know or remember the amount of owners on any car.

I've recently had an '83 Esprit, an '89 Esprit, an '87 911 and a '93 993.

When they get to 20 years old I buy on the car itself, anything done in the last five years on the car, and that's about it. If it changed hands 5 times in five years 10 years ago then that is pretty much irrelevant to it's current condition, IMO.
