PPI Recommendation in Surrey

Put a deposit down today on an '02 996 C4 from Cridfords in Ripley and was looking for recommendations on a PPI in the area.

Cridfords have recommendation GT1 in Chertsey, however I'm naturally edgy about using someone recommended by the garage themselves.

Any suggestions welcome !

or for that part of the country there is always Tognola Engineering up in Datchet

Rightly so, GT One do prepare Cridford's cars. Having said that - they are extremely thorough.

If cridfords have had the car serviced by GT One, or will have it checked over by them for you, why bother with a PPI

Cridfords are along established specialist

Either ring GT One , or Try Tognola in DatchetOn a 2 year old car don't be so paranoid about a PPI,

Thanks for the reply Mark although if I'm honest I did find it a tad agressive. Let me answer your points.

Yes I appreciate that dealers aren't all crooks, if I did I wouldn't spend £47k on a car from one ! My point is, that if I'm spending £47k then I would like a touch of satisfaction that nothing is going to catch me out down the line. In fact I discussed this very point with Jonathan at Cridfords and he entirely agreed.

The only concern I have is that Cridfords recommended GT One for the PPI, however neglected to mention that they prep the cars for them. In fact, they said that GT One would be able to liaise with THEIR workshop which was not only a little confusing but looks a little deliberately misleading.

Bearing in mind that the "I" in PPI stands for "Independent", I don't see how GT One could provide a truly independent report. For my own piece of mind I'd prefer a third party view.

Perhaps its paranoia, but then again, perhaps its £47,000 of my hard earned money.

You could try Camtune, they're only 15 minutes down the A3 from Ripley, they'll do an independent inspection, road test etc.

I've used them for servicing for the past 3 years and have always found them to be very good.

Ruddy Ada, these acronyms are catching me out. On an early post I got my HPI's and PPI's mixed up, and there's me thinking the 'I' in PPI stood for 'inspection' as in Pre Purchase Inspection

Think I'll hop on the DLR, and get home to HID for some TLC. My luck though, she'll be NFI

No you're right Hendo, it's me that's losing it ! :oops:

The "I" does stand for inspection. My mind was wandering with the points about Cridfords.

I did just speak to them and asked if it was true that GT One were prepping the car anyway and they admitted it. I'm now extremely concerned as they had seemingly gone out of their way to encourage me to use GT One as an "Independent" PPI source when in fact they were the ones preparing the car for Cridfords.

I would have had no problems if they'd have been straight with me from the beginning however they wanted me to pay for a non independent PPI from someone who was already working on the car. :(

Use Camtune - they are the closest to Cridfords (where I bought my 993 from) and are totally seperate. To use GTOne is like you walking into an OPC for a used 996, asking the salesmen for an inspection and the salesmen pointing to the service department to say 'that's nothing to do with me in there - they'll be independant and will give you an good overview'. GTOne do all Cridfords servicing, warranty work etc so just because they are on a different site makes no difference at all.

My 993 has potentially just been sold and Camtune did the inspection for the new owner (mind you, over 3 hours!) and I learnt more about the car the day before I sell it than I did when it was new! They even found a bit of rubber missing from the wiper blades I never even knew existed.

hi there,

been viewing this site for a while and decided to take te plunge with my first post! i would agree with andy and recommend camtune. i was the one who got the inspection done on his targa, at a cost of £170 approx. the detail they went into was excellent and they give you estimetes on the cost of any repairs that may be needed. they're well worth a visit. harry kular.

I actually sympathise with Cridfords - it can be really harrowing taking your car for a PPI when trying to sell it - a car that seems immaculate to you and I gets a list of problems as long as your arm of trivia that can be very off-putting to a potential buyer. I know because I have just been through it with my C4S sale.

BTW, I really liked the cars and the people at Cridfords. I was there only last week when my girlfriend just bought a Boxster from them. The car went for it's inspection and and they recommended new tyres and expensive things like that, and Cridford replaced them no questions asked.

I guess they don't appear on this forum very often because they tend to do RHD watercooled vehicles, but if you are in that market I would recommend them.

Getting a PPI is a must and a seller should not be frightened of it. If there are problems then they should be sorted or the price reduced. A serious buyer is going to get a PPI.... the seller may get lucky and get someone with no idea to buy it without ... maybe.

Of course as a buyer you should take the fact you are buying a second hand car into consideration and it is not coming from the factory so trival things as you put it LJ could be waved. It is the expensive things that need to be brought up if discovered by a PPI. (RMS etc...)

My PPI found a few extra things apart from those the seller pointed out. The price was reduced accordingly and I have now spent the same value of the reduction bringing the car up to scratch.







Of course I could still spend more ................. :?

Thanks for all the replies on this.

Just to backup the "pro-PPI" people on here, the inspection picked up

RMS, hard clutch (replaced), corroded exhaust bolts, new front discs, skimming of rear discs, new wiper blades. and an oil filler neck that let in a slight amount of air.

Well worth the money despite the car only having35k on the clock.
