PPI and Whale tail removal

Great site loads of good advice

Looking at purchasing an entry level 911 as my first Porsche and have approx 10-11K to spend. So far short list of 2

1986 3.2 Coupe approx 95K miles(7owners) Specialist service history (few chips on bodywork)

1979 3.0SC Targa approx 60K miles (2owners) Specialist service history (immaculate bodywork and interior) but has whale tail!

Both are approx £10,500 ..... which is the better value/ more reliable / fun?

Any recommendations re PPI in Kent? (+appox cost)

Also how much would it cost to get a whale tail removed and any recommendations?

Interesting dilemma Pap.

Generally speaking people say buy on condition and I dont think there were that many differences between the SC and the pre-G50 gearbox 3.2s. But 7 years is quite a lot older isnt it.

Removing the whale tail will need either a new boot lid or you can simply unbolt it and have the holes welded up in the boot lid it came with. Either way you will need a new grill. There are a couple of threads on here that go into more detail.

I bought my car in Kent from Paul Devyea / La Rose and would certainly recommend them for a PPI assuming they offer such a service. He may well have an opinion on which of those two cars to go for also.

Wasn't the 79SC also about 30hp short of the 3.2?? Have you driven either yet and if so how do you feel they compare?

£10,500 looks a bit cheap for a 3.2? The majority i've seen for that price have at least been LHD.

If its any help, there was a good pull out section in last months 911 and Porsche world covering both the SC and 3.2 and i have heard it said the SC is the best entry level porsche. I originally wanted a 3.2 but settled on an SC due to the price of Insurance for a 3.2 (about £1000 more for me!) - maybe something to consider.

If the SC was a coupe then I would say go with that...but the targa roof will provide such hassle(leakages etc) I would go wiht the 3.2. When a car is this old, 7 owners isn't really too much. On average each owner kept it for just over 2 years, which isn't too bad for a p?

Thanks for the advice Guys

Am getting the 1986 3.2 Coupe PPI'ed next week at Chilhams of Cantebury and depending on how that goes will be joining your ranks as the proud owner of a 911!
