Hi

I am looking for a the well forgotten about 968 without having to buy from people like autotrader and ebay. What do I look for and where would I get one with relatively low milaege? Any advice greatly appreciated.

Qestion of just keeping your eye out for one that suits you - you could try the monthly magazine 911 & Porsche World - they recently did a feature on the 968 or there are a number of independent dealers around selling them. Or you could try the 968 website...

Do not worry about low mileage, these are cars that are brilliant to drive and usually have higher than average miles as owners use them all the time. I should know as I just recently got rid of mine :)

The most important thing is to look for a car that is sound mechanically and has lots of reciepted history, if the bodywork is not concours that can be sorted easily and would be a bargining point. It would be better if the car was looked after by a well known Porsche specialist as OPCs no jack about the cars.

A must is that the belts have been changed every 40K or so, if the car you buy does not have written proof, get it done merely for piece of mind. If you are looking at a manual, pinion bearing have been a problem but most have had them fixed.

The 968 has received a lot of press this year and consequently prices are rising for the good ones hence the reason I sold mine as I got an offer I could not refuse.

Get yourself over to the 968UK forum

and ask questions there. A lot of good guys with a good community spirit who are always more than happy to answer questions.

Thanks for all the good advice. I think the next step is to find a 968 as they seem to be few and far between. Are the tiptronic versions worth a look aor are there problems? How much Cash could I expect to lose over 2 years or do they hold their value quite well?

I'm no expert... but I believe there's a couple of potentially expensive problems that 968s can develop, namely the variocam gear teeth and the rear axle pinion bearing, and it's certainly worth bearing these in mind. The 968uk website has an extremely helpful and friendly forum, and there's rennlist - it's mainly US-focussed, but of course their 968s have the same problems as ours.

Prices do seem to be holding up well, unfortunately for me as it means I'll probably have to choose between a 944 and waiting another year for a 968. Maybe one approach is to go for a relatively high mileage car that's had its gremlins fixed.

Tiptronics seem quite rare. I haven't heard people talk about problems - and they don't apparently suffer from the pinion bearing problem - but I believe perfomance suffers - the 0-60 increases from 6.5 seconds to just under 8.

Tiptronic cars are well worth considering, don't be put off by people telling you that they are no good, most of these comments are made by people who have not even driven one.

I have had two tips and although I now have a manual when I get in to heavy traffic, which is nearly every day, I yearn for the tip.

It all depends, at the moment these cars are offering fantastic value for money in regards to depreciation and a number of 968 owners are running there cars and then selling at a profit. IMHO taking out service costs and items that would require replacing eg tyres, you could find this a very affordable way into Porsche ownership.

Get over to 968UK and introduce yourself, I know that a lot of the guys have looked at what is on the market and visited some of the cars and will give you an honest opinion of their condition, say William sent you :D

On the performance issue. The 0-60 figure is higher but that has no bearing in the real world unless you are a ricer (american term!) and want to do traffic light drags.

On the road and in tip, not auto, you will keep up with any 968 unless it is driven by mad MikeH
.

What Phil says is true about pinion bearings in tips as they do not suffer from this and as long as the belts have been changed every 40k miles or 4 years then that will not be a problem.

Again do not get emotional about mileages, I would worry about a low mileage one. These cars engines are good for 200k if they have been maintained properly.

Now get over to 968UK :)
Even though I don't have the 968 I still stay in touch with the guys on the forum

Thank you all for the help and advice, i am no going over to 968uk and have a chat with the boys there and see if anybody is selling up. What price should I be prepared to pay top and bottom?

It all depends on condition and if the person knows that they have got an appreciating assett and not just the next generation 944

But ball park, anywhere between £10 -16k
