Photo Blocker

Mark,

My take.....personally I think it's a load of B****ks.

Firstly, surely you've seen what they can do this days with photo enhancing on a blurry CCTV image. Therefore I'm sure someone would take great pleasure in enhancing the image of your number plate to prove they are more smarter than you. Secondly, even if they were only able to partially make out your number plate, a quick search on the DVLA database of the car type and colour would confirm they have the correct registration. And thirdly, is £20 really worth wasting to give you that false hope that you might be ok. Most people know where all the static cameras are which contain flashes. It's the mobile laser cameras you need to watch out for (and are more likely to be caught by) and they don't need flashes....the site fails to mention that.

Save the £20 and put it towards an Origin B2 or road angel. These will alert you to all the cameras which contain flashes.

just my opinon.

Paul

I have been told by a reliable source that this does work. I have seen this mask a number plate from an onboard police camera...which guarantees you a pull!!! You WILL get charged with perverting the course of justice if you use this on your road car! However...its not illegal to sell it...read the small print on the can!!

Mark, I bought some at Goodwood Festival, because apparently "it did what it said on the tin".

www.safeplateuk.co.uk
.

Used it on the bike at first, and have done both cars (one tin should do at least 4 vehicles). Took a picture using my digital camera and was most disappointed to find out the I could read the VRN, however it was only after contacting the company to vent my spleen about how I had just paid £25 for a tin of spit, that they explained that speed cameras operate with an increased flash power of 500w and as a result the product does not react with car headlights, or the 2-4 watt digital camera flash. In sum, I can't prove it works as I have not had the misfortune to have it tested by the Yellow boxed 'Fun-Police'.

That said, the rational for buying it was not to kick the arse out of making progress, it was more a case of attempting to avoid those moments where you may not be concentrating as much and stumble across the new camera or are driving on unfamiliar territory (as I did in Feb (81 mph in a 70)).

Of note, forward facing cameras have the technology / pixel size to extract infomation from your tax disk, so simply spraying the number plate will not work (sneeky). Haven't thought how to avoid this one, apart from removing the disk from the screen when driving, but that's illegal and would draw unwanted attention.

I agree with Paul about the Origin B2 - got one myself and they are excellent. You can buy car kits relatively cheaply (thereby allowing you to swap the credit card sized unit between cars). The database for Origin is updated regularly unlike some companies who promise the earth and don't deliver.

I suppose the moral of the story is don't speed, but that's rather boring.

Apparently spray-on wood varnish or hair spray stuff does the job too - I never bothered but if you have some lying around at home.....

Simon, thinking of the size of the reg on your tax disk and a camera several metres away and the (alleged) speed you are travelling somehow doubt that front-facing-pixel-technology story, but if it is true, can I recommend just the tiniest bit of trapped leaf as you insert the disk - that should do it!!

JL - the information on the pixel technology was secondhand (heard they used the bar code to track you down) - maybe a load of bull, however I'm sure they could blow the photo up enough to get a good view of the grin on my face.

Rather than buy a can of spray, i find a pic-axe swung from the floor standing underneath the speed camera, takes care of the problem, also a towel soaked in petrol and wrapped around the angle bracket and ignited offers an alternative.

these things are an absolute curse and quite frankly a hazard on the roads today, i spend 30% of my attention looking for constantly changing speed limits and cameras rather than 100% concentration on the road ahead.

this is what happens when some faceless corporate tyranny is given the opportunity of making a 'buck' from the motoring public whilst hiding behind legislation and the law, be it congestion charging (con being the operative word!) parking wardens or speed cameras.

They are indeed a curse. Hurray to the AA for trying to help out the beleaguered motorist...

Now we just need a way to track those plain clothes white vans that make sure nobody goes above 30 mph on highly dangerous dual carriageways in non-built up areas
