Always ready to rise to a fresh challenge, the nine-time world rally champion Sébastien Loeb and Peugeot Sport will contest the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on June 30. The Frenchman will tackle the world's highest hill climb - which culminates at an altitude of 4,301 metres - at the wheel of the 208 T16 Pikes Peak which was specially engineered and built by Peugeot Sport. The event marks the French team's return to the classic American event after its memorable victories there in 1988 and 1989.

The announcement of this ambitious project three weeks ago caused something of a buzz in motorsport circles, and the time has now come for the next phase of this exciting adventure: the unveiling of the machine with which Sébastien Loeb will target victory in Colorado. Although its exterior styling resembles that of the production model, the Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak was tailor engineered and designed to meet the specific needs of the famous American event.

No punches have been pulled with the 208 T16 Pikes Peak which will compete in the event's premier 'Unlimited' class, a category that allows plenty of freedom on the technical front. The engineers have naturally taken on-board the salient features of this legendary competition, the USA's oldest after the Indy 500 and a truly unique cocktail because of its incredibly twisty, high-altitude course.

I can't believe this was 25 years ago.

Awesome commitment (especially around 3.30) :worship:

Peugeot has unveiled more details of its Pikes Peak challenger, including its prodigious power figure. The 208 T16 will attack the world famous hill climb with an impressive 1016bhp/ton power-to-weight ratio, an identical figure to the 275mph Hennessey Venom GT hypercar and twice that of a Bugatti Veyron.

Power is served up by a twin-turbo 3.2-litre V6 engine boasting 875bhp. That's a figure higher than not only the bulk of today's supercars, but Formula 1 cars, too. Its forced induction is a riposte to the predicted 30 per cent loss in power that naturally aspirated engines face between the climb's 2865m-high start point and 4301m peak. Claimed acceleration figures are rather impressive - 0-62 takes 1.8sec, 0-124 4.8sec and 0-149mph is completed in 7.0sec.

At its heart, though, the T16 – which weighs 875kg – deviates heavily from all other Peugeot 208s. Its running gear (including pushrod suspension), brakes vented carbon discs, 380mm front, 355mm rear) and aerodynamic setup – including that behemoth, 2m-wide rear wing – are from the French company's former Le Mans competitor, the 908 HDI endurance racer.

The switch to an all-tarmac course for Pikes Peak has allowed such resource sharing, and with the T16's speed set to reach 150mph in places, extravagant aerodynamic measures are useful. And while most attention will be directed to that spoiler, almost half the T16's downforce will come from its underbody tray.

The mid-engine, four-wheel-drive 208 T16 – which is rather more menacing than the European R5 rally car of the same name – will be driven by World Rallying's most decorated driver, Sebastien Loeb, who is dabbling in a number of motorsport arenas as his WRC involvement winds down after nine world titles.

and here comes the competition
The Toyota GT86 has been transformed into a Pikes Peak challenger. The Toyota Super 86 will compete in the Unlimited class of the legendary hill climb event, taking on the Peugeot 208 T16 and fighting for overall honours.

Like the 208, its resemblance to its road car relative doesn't extend far beyond pasting some carryover headlights onto an uber-powerful race car. Gone is a front-mounted 2–litre boxer four engine with 197bhp, in its place an amidships 3-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine producing 670bhp and 597lb ft connected to a six-speed sequential gearbox.

That's someway short of the Peugeot's 875bhp, and with a stockier 1080kg to shift, the Toyota's 630bhp/ton power-to-weight ratio is quite short of its French rival's 1016bhp/ton.

Though while the Peugeot is being piloted by rally legend Sebastien Loeb, at the Toyota's helm will be Nobuhiro Tajima (more commonly known as Monster Tajima), a man with over 20 years of Pikes Peak experience. That includes breaking the hill climb record twice over, most recently in 2011 when he blasted through the ten-minute barrier in a Monster Sport Suzuki SX4. That's a car this Super 86 bears a fairly heavy resemblance too.

Power or experience, Peugeot or Toyota, Loeb or Tajima; where will your money lie come June 30 and the 2013 Pikes Peak?

Sebastien Loeb, of France, powers his Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak across the finish line to set a record time of 8:13.87 in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

French rally star Sebastien Loeb has secured victory at the Pikes Peak hillclimb.

The nine-time World Rally Champion smashed the course record by more than a minute on his first attempt, recording an 8:13.878 time on the Colorado mountain.

Loeb's car, a 650kW Peugeot 208 T16, had the measure of his rivals including defending champion, New Zealand's Rhys Millen, who lowered his own personal best time in a Hyundai prototype by more than 30sec.

Millen told journalists at Pikes Peak that Loeb, who has semi-retired from the WRC ahead of a move into the World Touring Car Championship with Citroen in 2014, was ''unbeatable'' in the outright class and that his Peugeot was one of the fastest cars the race had ever seen.

The Frenchman's Peugeot was inspired by Ari Vatanen's victorious 405 T16 coupe which won in 1988 and was made famous by the short film Climb Dance.

The Pikes Peak rally is motorsport's own Mount Everest, a treacherous race to the sky with more than 150 turns.

It is one of the oldest contests in motorsport, having hosted competition since 1916.

The course was transformed from gravel to asphalt in 2012, when Millen set a record time of 9:46.164.

Nearly 150 cars and motorcycles competed in this weekend's event.
