painting an edge

I have just had small accident, when reversing the car on to some ramps with the door open I didn't notice that the door edge/seam was going to hit a storage unit. Fortunately the unit broke and the door seam was not dented, however it has rubbed about 2inches of paint off of the seam.

I propose to mask off the front face of the door and the inside of the door leaving just the seam exposed and then spray it lightly with a tin of basalt black paint. When it is dry I will rub it down very gently with some rubbing compound and then maybe apply a little clear lacquer. Is this the right technique? I don't want to make another stupid mistake.
