Orange Peely Paint

Still looking at this Iris Blue 993 C2...Everything checks out, but seeing the car today I thought the paint looked excessively 'orange peely' - the dealer (independent Porsche specialist) assured me that 'they all do that sir', especially in that colour, but also in pretty much every other colour (apart from Black & Silver).

Can any of you guys (or girls) with non Black or Silver Porsches let me know if this make sense?

If it helps - the orange peel effect is all over the car, not on one particular spot.

Cheers

Luke

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but our old iris blue 993 C2(
might be the same one!) 's paint was starting to look a bit naff by the time we sold it. I doubt its anything a bit of zymol couldn't solve

Thanks Noony,

I mean, when you look along, say, the roof of the car, you don't get a flat reflection, it looks like the paint's got a mild case of cellulite.

Think I'm probably worrying about nothing, but I get like that when I'm about to part with my hard-earned!

Think we've just stumbled into the weird parallel world of a caption competition...

Orange peel on your 993..

Its unlikely that the 993 you are looking at is original paint, usually the roof and bonnet will have very 'flat' i.e. not orange peel paint from the factory. Its also unlikely to find too many 993 without any panels repainted so what to do?

Look very carefully for any swirls, lines, waves or uneveness in the paint surface (indicating repairs). check for original panels (has it been shunted?), or shrinkage marks (eliptical ridges) in the surface.

Lift up the rubbers, open the sunroof and see any overspray or masking lines.

If you want to be more sure then get a bodyshop man to look rather than a mechanic (who sometimes arent so good on body).

If its a real worry, walk away and find one with a clearer past.

p.s. you could always call the previous owner for his story.

p.p.s. HPI only record a % of total losses - not all of them and not other levels of damage.

Walk away!

I agree with Poon, I've got a midnight Blue and I can see any of the paintwork issues that you've raised.

Walk away mate, it's your hard earned cash that you're spending - There are plenty more good ones out there!

BTW Poon, how's the RSR?

I am fitting them this morning, put the car up on the jacks last night, wheels off, WD40 out, can't wait.

My new Roock springs look nice, I'll post a pic, when they are done I am going to blast down to JZ as they have got a Roock strut brace waiting for me.

This slippery slope is costly!

Paint sounds like heat exposure. Is car an import from far east?

Paint sounds like a not so good respray. Good paintwork from Porsche should not have any orange peel effect, "normal" respray paint shop will give slight orange peel unless they spend time polishing the surface after respray. If you look carefully, even a new BMW/Merc has slight orange peel effect, esp. with solid colours. Not sure about 996 but the 993s I've seen so far all had perfectly smooth and shiny paintwork, with no signs of orange peel effect.

Oops, feel a bit silly now...

Imagine if you will an anxious figure late yesterday afternoon in his local Porsche dealership, with his nose inches from the gleaming flanks of a wide selection of dark coloured Porsches, moving from car to car as he realises that what he thought was an imperfection in the object of his desire was, er, completely normal...

Thanks for all your posts & advice, I'm going ahead with the purchase, & will post some pics in a couple of weeks time once I've collected

Cheers

Luke
