Oily residue in engine bay

I had a look in the engine bay yesterday, and noticed an oily residue in and around the airbox and around the engine bay generally. Any ideas how / why that got there?

Consistency and appearance is a bit like dried WD40, I'll try and take a pic or 2 when I get home after work today.

I had an oil change last week done by a Specialist. I asked them about the oily stuff today, and they said that they didn't spill any oil, and that the greasy stuff I'm referring to might be the engine lacquer used to dress the engine.

Anyone noticed anything similar?
