My car is due a 12k service. My local specialist includes semi-synthetic Castrol Magnatec 10w-40 in the menu price, but offers fully synthetic as a chargeable upgrade.

What's best for my 993?

Secondly, I have a sump's worth of unused Mobil 1 in the garage which I never got round to putting in my 3.2 Carrera. Only problem? Bought the oil in 1996! Does oil have a finite life? It's moved house with me twice, so it is of some sentimental value...

The oil was in the ground for a few million years so a couple in the garage shouldn't hurt!

I went for Mobil 1 0w 40 I beleive the Porsche suggested oil. However other people may disagree.......

Put Texaco Havoline 10w-40 semi in my car last service on Northway's advise - certainly appears to do exactly 'what it says on the tin' oil consumption has been drastically improved. So on the face of it thicker semi oils would appear to block leaks rather than slip through like thinner synth's. Northway also advised not to mix oils - I had 4 litres of mobil 1 left over and gave it away to fellow 911uk'er.

although 0W-40 and 5W-40 are the recommended oils, 10W-40 is the cheaper stuff..

but you want to get the Esher based 5W-40 Silkoline Pro S which is Porsche approved, which is what the oil man (simon) has advised, so in about 3.5k miles that is what will be going in !

On the subject of oil I have read that a warmed up 996 at 5000rpm should have pressure of around 3.0. Mine seems slightly higher than this. Should I be concerned?

My oil pressure varies from about 3 bar at tick over on a warmed up engine to right up the top of the gauge when I boot it.

Thanks Seagull. That seems to be what mine is doing.

BTW not sure if I will be able to do the Curry meet so guess you WILL be the only 996 Targa there. Let me know next time you are passing Gatwick so at least we can see another of our cars on the road.
