OIL OVERFILL...I think? Dipstick color?

I'm freaking out right now. I just purchased my first Porsche-a 91 C4. The oil level guage on the dash seemed to stay in the red-so I added almost 1 quart of oil.

I think my real problem stems from reading the dipstick. I remove it and wipe it dry...then I reinsert (with the engine warmed up and still running). When I pull it out, I'm not sure how to read it. It comes out wet, with a clearer looking fluid up to WELL above the max mark. However, a darker fluid only comes up to midway between the two lines-an acceptable reading.

Which is the oil level to read? Is the darker brown fluid the oil? Or is the clearer (less dark) fluid oil as well-in which case I've overfilled. I'm thinking the car was fine, and I screwed it up. PLEASE advise...

THanks

have you read your owners manual?

Sounds like the darker stuff is old oil and the lighter stuff the new. But sounds like you've SERIOUSLY overfilled it. Read the manual. Wait for the oil to settle when the car's been standing idling for several minutes - could be 5 mins or so, and it can seem like an age. Check the dash gauge and the dipstick.

Get the excess drained out pronto. Not sure it's driveable with so much oil... What do others think?

Would not drive it...

Get a clean piece of hose and insert it into the oil filler point. Get yourself to the same level as the feed point of the hose and... yes... apply mouth suction. When the oil fills your mouth, calmly lower the hose to below the feed point. Take 2 liters out.

Rinse out your mouth... get a beer then...

Read your manual about checking the oil level. Many others have made your mistake.. checking the oil level is a pain in the ***.

Welcome.

Thanks, can that be done? I took a four foot hose and stuck it as far as it seemed it could go into the spot I pour oil in when I add. It went almost the entire length of the hose way in. I can't seem to suck any up though.

Is this doable?

your not sucking hard enough, give Jordan a call, I'm sure Peter won't mind!
