I've had my '98 996 for just 8 months and when I bought it the oil level on the dash was reading maximum. I've only put 5000k miles on it but now the level is down to the minimum.
Is this normal and if so what it the best oil to top it up with?

Apologies for such dumbass questions! :? :?

have you checked it via the dipstick in those 8 months too????................i think i'm slack not checking mine via the dipstick every week but once a fortnight
.........remember guages can and do lie

these guages are pretty accurate. each bar on the guage represent 0.2 litres so in 5k thats not really bad going considering that a 996 turbo will burn 1 litre every 1000k (650 odd miles)

My car burns about a litre every 1000 - 2000 miles.

i take it they are more accurate than the 993 ones............the sender on my 993 was replaced a few months before i bought mine

Thanks for the replies, my mind is at rest now about hidden oil leaks.

What is the best /recommended oil to top up with?

depends whats already in there..............if there's fully synthetic in there then obviously use a fully synthetic(making sure its the same viscosity).......i would be doubtful of there being part synthetic there as tbh i wouldn't run a big performance engine on it.....even my 10yo Corrado still gets the good stuff

I've no idea what viscosity is in there as I haven't put any in since I bought the car, however I am pretty sure it's going to be fully synthetic.
