I recently (august) had the car serviced at the local OPC, local as in 300 kilometers away. During the last couple of weeks the engine has started to misfire slightly, on tick over you can hardly notice it. Under hard driving it is a lot more noticeable. For the last 2weeks it has p**sed down , so I thought it might be water penetration but it seems not, I have changed the dme. I have taken it to the local garage?? They have suggested changing plugs if that does'nt work something else and so on.
Anyway so to my question, I understand you can buy a OBD2 that plugs into the car and does a diagnostic test. Has anyone used one. Are they worth the money. Is there any particular one that is better than the rest. Any other ideas suggestions.

Sounds like something on the electrical side.
Not sure an OBD2 would be a worthwhile investment TBH.
Where are you based - is that you 'local' Porsche place - aren't there any indy's nearby to look at it ?

Peter. If you go down this route, first you need to find out whether your car has got OBDII or EOBD. The difference is which of the pins are wired. I know on mine, OBDII does absolutely nothing. If I can find out, I'll let you know which pins are active on which.

I can't find which ones are active on the EOBD but on OBD II, if you look at the socket with the longest side at the top, both rows have 8 possible connections. The active ones are:

Top row, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 7th

Bottom row, 1st, 6th, 7th, 8th

Peter, unfortuantely the generic OBD2 doesn't work on the 993, the port is the same but alas it doesn't, tried it on my old 993

Thanks for the help guys. This is one of those situations where on the outset it seems quite straightforward, then you enter a minefield. One of the downsides living here is the lack of expertise in performance cars. Even the OPC in Lisbon does'nt give me any confidence.
Looks like a trip to the local garage for a plug change. However he said the rear bumper has to be removed to do this??!! This can't be right....can it?

I suspect that means that you had the EOBD. Just to confuse things, the two plugs/sockets are identical, it's just the active pins which differ. I believe that OBD II is the American standard and compulsary fittment on all cars sold over there. Perhaps Hendo would like your old interface if you still have it.
