Has anyone else experienced a rattle on the front end of a 996? It seems to get worse after driving for a while and at low speed. It's like a suspension rattle. Love to hear ...

could be your suspension top mounts? Does it sounds like the speaker/ glove box is rattling?

Just noticed this noise on mine, this week !

Definitely a suspension rattle - will probably get my local Indy to check it over this week and report back.

Tuning fork arms guaranteed.

Had a similar issue on my 996, when cold was silent and after 50 miles or so would develop a knock that could be felt through the steering wheel at low speeds....it transpired that the near side inner tie rod on the end of the steering rack was developing play in the ball joint. A new OEM one was sourced from eBay, fitted and problem solved. The part was £36 and fitting was about one hour.
If you are getting a creaking bed spring type of noise, then that is the coffin arm ball joint on its way out!

Hello,
my car has the same strange noise coming from the front and also it comes up when it is warmer after I drive a little bit, do you know the part number or the name of the part that I need to change?

Cheers

Thanks

Really appreciate it guys - it's gives me some direction. It sounds like the same as your describing, noisy rattle low down which only comes out once warm over uneven surfaces. Thanks heaps!

If the noise goes away when you apply the brakes, It could be the fork arms, as someone above me said. At least it was a symptom on my car.

Had mine checked over yesterday and its the tuning fork arm. Nice one Maor :thumb: (The technician thought I was Billy Whizz.......one for our older members !!!)

Thanks C4S MUN - I appreciate the thought. Its more a lower front suspension rattle - metallic

Front tuning fork arms
Thanks Maor - will check on that. Would light pressure on the brake pedal remove the noise if it was the tuning forks?

Thanks BG996 - it does take the noise away when the brakes are applied, even lightly. I'll get it sorted eventually...you would think a Porsche specialist would be able to diagnose it? Arrghhh

It's the tuning fork arms.
You can't diagnose this arm as it's not as conventially setup like on other cars.

if it's a strong metallic loose sockets in your boot type noise, and everything is tight underneath, then its the TF arms.

It's only a 10 minute job a side thing to do.

Do the TF arms use rose joints where they bolt up ? they look like that from all the photos I can find.

Also it's likely not that these cars are getting on a bit that many of the components up front are tired.

I plan on going through mine replacing all the bits that wear out over the next year.
