My wife treated me to an NM Automotive CarPlay setup for Christmas and yesterday I swallowed the brave pills and fitted it
It's a very involved installation; if you're at all nervous about prying open your PCM unit and messing around with ribbon cables then have a professional do the job. Me, I like this stuff so thought I'd get involved!
The NM Automotive kit is very thorough and comes with replacement ribbon cables x4, the PCB itself and a bunch of other cables. If attempting the installation yourself I'd encourage you to watch the various Youtube videos available for installing the similar Joy Auto kit - they helped me a lot, particularly in removing and opening the PCM without damaging anything. Nick at NM Automotive was very open to supporting too although I managed to avoid disturbing him!
The expansion box that does the work is reasonably large and space is tight behind the PCM so I found a spot under the steering wheel to hide the box, cables and site the mic (for SIRI). I fitted the USB port down in the footwell as I'll only need this for software updates in the future.
Overall I'm very impressed with the kit and the quality of the CarPlay implementation on the PCM. The wifi connection works flawlessly and the touchscreen is both responsive enough and high enough resolution to work well.
It's an expensive kit but if like me you crave CarPlay and want to retain the stock PCM setup I cannot fault it. You can add back- and front-facing cameras too if that's your thing.
