Hello,

I am a recent convert to 911 ownership since buying a 993 C4 in December. Car has been real good so far (apart from a hairy spin on my 2nd day of ownership!).

Anyway, I find the headlights to be on the very poor side of average (big beams are good however) - has anyone upgraded their bulbs, if so to what wattage? I want better lights but not every oncoming vehicle being blinded!

Cheers

Dunc

Hi Dunc,

I have a 993 C4S with the xenon lights. It's so wonderfull that the big beam (which is non xenon) looks "sick" . I upgraded them with 100 watts bulbs, but it's still weak compare to the xenon. I've seen 130 watts bulbs, but did not try them yet. The best solution for you would be to upgrade your normal beam with the litropnic option. But this is probably expensive.

Cheers

JP

Not sure if it applies to 993's but earlier 911s used to suffer from burnt out switches if you upgraded the bulbs too much - something about all the current running through the switches cos no relay was used. I am no electrician - perhaps someone else can explain better.

Cheers, James

Aha!

Found a short term answer in that the headlight adjustment has a -1 position which lifts the beams enough to improve the field of vision.

Think the fact that my car has the sports suspension means the lower ride height messes up the beams when set at 0.

Will look into xenon for the future though.

Dunc,

A mate at work has suggested that I move onto PIAA bulbs, which are meant to be greatly superior!

James,

Can you post a note to let us know how they are if you go ahead with the change.

I fitted a HID (Xenon, Litronic by another name) to my 1994 993. Litronic was an option in Europe so the lenses, reflectors and wiring are compatible. There was a lot of traffic on Rennlist.com and a few of us in the UK fitted them. They knock normal bulbs into the shade (excuse the pun). There is just no comparison. The upgrade is not cheap (around £400) but in my opinion the cost was worth it. The UK Rennlist users named
Autolamps-online.com
as the best place to buy the kit from.

regards

No problem, I'm getting them changed next Friday, along with getting by disc's srapped! (Sounds painful, but apparantly makes the brakes far smoother - only applied to non-tracked cars)
