new windscreen warning!

All,

Be aware if you are thinking of replacing your windscreen for any reason as the new pilkinton sourced replacement by Porsche has a seal issue. It is a visible joint which can be seen from inside the cabin, and its quality in finish is deplorable. Porsche are aware as I have been copied into their corrispondance where my supplier was advised they could return the new screen under warranty; however a number of screens may need ordering to be returned as there is a whole batch issue and they cant guarantee the quality will not be worse! I'd recommend all to wait for confirmation that the issue has been resolved and the stock issue sorted. Appaling attitude for such a prestigeous badgebut there you go!

Another good excuse for me to ignore my lightly chipped screen for a while longer :thumb:

I had my screen repaired (chip repair not replacement) by a very nice chap from autoglass who does primarily replacements and done 5 Porsches within 3 days and said that there is a problem with the pilkinton glass and more specifically with the seal. In order to mitigate that he has to follow a slightly different process but said is more challenging than it should. ..also mentioned that in the recent past they had other problems as well related with the specific glass. ...

OP can you elaborate on what you mean by 'seal' please?

Ta.
Dont know what OP means but in case its me, the seal I refer to is the rubberised frame that the glass is bonded to by the manufacturer, that the external rubber finish seal clips into.

Hi,

As I've mentioned before I had an XYG screen fitted before I left Q8 it cost me a mere Stg 100.00 fitted. Due to the outer seal being the wrong size (OPC supplied) the fitter did away with the plastic surround and fitted a universal seal and bonded the screen in. I've never had a leak or a squeak and last year the screen was removed and replaced here in Spain when I had the scuttle repaired, all went well and no adverse comment from the body shop.

Some of the prices for windscreens that have been mentioned on here are extortionate and I would advise for what it's worth to shop around. Lets face it the screen will not effect the cars performance.

ATB :)

Thanks. You say it's visible from inside the cabin?

Correct, very visible, directly in front on the passenger position to the bottom of the screen! Wouldnt be so bad if they used their brains and made the weld at the top of he screen!

Any chance of an image?
Unfortunately, the car was left at the body shop to look into the issue. They are currently reapiring the fault to get the screen into my car as i need it for a touring holiday which starts in the next few days!

paul its the bead on the back edge that go's round the the inside right in the middle it looks like herman the german has stuck his finger in it when wet...so when its in the car you can see it from the inside as the bead looks to have a gap in the middle & so its not uniform

Ah - the pre-applied PUR?

Have had to trim this back once or twice - the advantage of dry fitting before splodging it in.

PS, luv u x
