New steering wheel - Momo mod 07 leather

Thought I'd put a couple of pics of my most recent fettling...

Have to say I keep going back to Oz951's website as it's a fantastic resource for 996 owners. My last job was fitting the M030 kit which turned out to be a bit of a trial to loosen the front anti-roll base drop links. For the record from my standard suspension on a C2 it didn't actually change the ride height as I guess the original springs had sagged with age.

On to the steering wheel... I didn't want the usual Cup suede wheel as it tends to look crap quite quickly and this is my daily driver. I couldn't find any pics of the leather version fitted to a 996 so hopefully this will fix that problem for others too.

Only slightly smaller than the stock 4 spoke wheel

For reference, this is how far back it moved:

It's definitely an improvement although I haven't really driven it much yet. Unfortunately the airbag resistor trick doesn't seem to have worked for some reason, any ideas? I'm also seeing how I get on with the momo horn button before deciding if I'll bother getting a Porsche one. For info the 964 horn contact was just over £6 from Porsche Solihull.

Other recent fettling is switching out the wiper blade rubbers for PIAA silicone, can't say they have got water beading yet but they are silent and smooth. I also stripped the rear wiper mechanism and re-greased and tensioned the electrical contacts. Before it would be a bit random where it would park as the weakened contacts weren't giving enough current to get past a dry or icey surface, it always gets back to its home position now which really bugged me (slightly OCD!!)

Hi Ricola,

I'm very interested in you M030 experiences.

I too have tired original shocks & springs.

I was thinking of getting the M030 kit as it is effectively the best value way of renewing those parts. However I don't want the ride quality to suffer.

Did the M030 make an appreciable difference in crashiness over rough roads / potholes when compared to tired OE setup?

Ideally I'd get new OE non m030 parts, but when you compare the prices it doesn't make sense. I had a 350z previously, and the 911 rides much better than that did (it didn't soak up uneven roads like the 911 does), I don't want to ruin it for the driving I do.

Wasz: my car had done about 95k miles when I did the swap and my overall feeling is that you do feel more of the road but not in a bad way if that makes sense. It also cured the floatiness that had developed with age, feels more responsive too, more pointy. Lots of subtle improvements really, certainly not too stiff.
The price of the whole M030 kit does seem cheap compared to the original parts, mine ended up being about £570 from the dealer with the 10% club discount..

do you have the airbag warning light constantly on? Did you check the resistance of the resistor once you had soldered it in to the airbag circuit?

From memory you need a 2.8 ohm resistor

That steering wheel looks amazing. Nice job.

Have to say I'm really enjoying the extra space for my legs and improved driving position for my arms, should have done it ages ago!

I like that a LOT!

Looks fantastic. :thumb:

Thanks - yes the whole M030 kit can be had for the price of 2x shocks...

Hi,
Love the wheel so much I ordered one nut im thinking now, Is this an MOT failure?

The airbag light on is a failure, just make sure you get the right resistor in before you connect things up after fitting the wheel. I'll have to get mine reset by a mate with PIWIS.. After some inspection it turns out the resistor I got supplied was wrong.

OK that's cool, My wheels coming with all the kit from carnewal so will post up when sorted, Thank god about the MOT as I sold my other wheel.
Cheers

I'm looking at changing the wheel on my 996 to increase the space to get my leg into the car. I too wondered about the Insurance implications of not having an air bag?
Does the new wheel have to come fitted with the yellow tape/ strip at twelve o clock?
