I recently had the new PCCM+ installed in my 2002 C4S

Full install video is here:

Features Review video is here:

My car had the factory PCM1 with BOSE, Amp and 6 Disc CD changer and the Navigation CD module.

I didnt have the MOST Fibre Optic system. Hopefully it helps anyone looking to install the new unit themselves. Everything works perfectly including the DAB+

If anyone has any questions let me know.

Thank you for sharing. The 996 C4S is one of my all time favourite 911's.

I read all the press releases and they all state the single din version fits 993 and older. I have a 2002 996.2 with a factory fitted single din head unit. Has anyone fitted the single din version to their 996?

I can see no reason why it wouldn't fit. Curious to see if anyone has done it or at least verified it can be done?

Great video, on your part, clear and great review.

However I'm afraid he really butchered the install and would really advise either redoing completely or annotating the video as to avoid others installing it wrong as pretty much every part of the install was done wrong.

I'm afraid he misinformed you with the glove box. My car is a 996 C4S as well, RHD UK and fits without issue. There's a hole in the glove compartment for it to go through and the cable has plenty of length, you just need to first pull it through the hole to where the radio goes and it will plug in fine then when you slide the radio in you then get a load more cable length.
Pic below of mine and the hole, which is already there as well, no drilling of anything.

The microphone I would have personally stuck to the factory way on the steering shroud, I feel it looks a lot more factory as you don't see the cable, also see the picture. My 996 is a cabrio too and had no problems making calls even with the roof down so sound quality isn't an issue in this location and no need to route it up top, feeling this was done just as it's easier than running the cable through the steering shroud and requires you lying in the footwell to route and is a but uncomfortable and takes a little time to do it right.

The radio splitter goes on the shelf included the short cables should feed under the unit's shelf to the front then the box sits on the unit straight to stick, again just a rush job rather than doing it right.

Finally I was almost screaming the my screen when he just pushed the radio in and said done. The whole plastic frame should come out then the radio is assembled in the frame back goes on after with the bracket that sandwiches in the radio to the frame. in your install the radio is not held in with anything, literally loose, there are no spring clips ect on this system. This is probably why he doesn't think the cable will fit from the USB box since he's trying to pull it through the frame which he was meant to take out. Again just trying to save time that follow the instructions he has literally in front of him.

Think I'll avoid taking my car to JZM Porsche, thankfully I DIY just about everything since I really don't trust a garage to take the time or care you would with your own car and this video proved me justified.

Anyone know who actually makes this unit? I know it's made for and sold by Porsche but it must be made under license by one of the big electronic manufacturers.

Can i ask if you have to install any cables or aerials for the DAB to work correctly?

Is anyone trusting there OPC to install these units?!

Thanks,

Phil

You bypass the factory antenna amplifier with the cables provided. depending on if you have a PCM 2.0 that has two antennas or any other radio that has two depends which cable you use. if you look in the one of the other PCCM+ post I put some images up to show what you need to replace and with which cables. the DAB uses the factory antenna minus the amp as the amp attenuates non AM/FM frequencies and then the new radio has a splitter box that deals with the non amplified signal direct from the antenna.

Every question I asked my OPC received an answer along the lines of, the unit is too knew and no one know anything about it. So honestly you are probably better off doing a DIY with a T20 bit and a Philips screwdriver you can complete the entire install it's really not that complex.

To be honest pretty much everything I've ever asked the OPC regarding parts has been along the lines of they don't know unless you own something in the current generation of cars.

I'm thinking of taking the time to do a full write up on the installation as it is pretty vague and seems alot of people are struggling and even some reputable indies are bodging it.

I've only installed one of these so far and had issues with the amplifier over amplifying the sound ..

Thanks to esendia i got it to 8/30 for normal volume but i had to turn most settings way down to achieve this .

The instructions say for the gps antenna on the dashboard .. really ??? dam ugly in that position but its possible to route it to the o/s/f of the battery .. there's just about enough space between the wiper motor and center panel for it to get a good view of the sky and so work .

The USB box .. again instructions say glove box and again i think that's a poor place for it ( my opinion only , it makes perfect sense but i prefer the look of it being on display ) .. i removed the nav unit , fitted a cubby and installed it there ..

Downside .. the lead is too short .. you really couldn't make it up as it's listed in the instructions as a possible installation place but the lead don't reach .

Unit in as far as it will go .. jam your hand in and plug it in by touch ... it's possible but i'm not doing another one that way that's for sure .

My gut feeling of this unit so far ..

it's like the original classic radio for the early cars .. for every 5 fitted we removed 4 due to unhappy customers !!

Ok to be fair its probably not that bad but atm there is No OPC help on these .. i feel it's better suited to a Fibre optic system .. PCM 2 than a one .. OP says his works fine so that's good ..

I wasn't happy with how my instal over amplified the sound ..

I need to fit a few more but for now i'm disappointed to be honest .

Its not often i say that about Porsche parts !!!

I will also add ... esendia is the goto man for help on these :thumb:

Hi, the video shows you how to connect to the existing aerial cables with the supplied hardware. You have to remove the drivers side panel above the door to access the existing aerial connections and then run a new wire down, remove the top speaker to get better access and run the wires down to the rear of the dash.

Wouldnt you prefer the double DIN unit since you have the space in the dash for it? or have you done the console delete and want to just have climate controls and single din unit?

I will find out for you if the single din version will fit the 996 as im sure others will want to know.

THANKS, I JUST WANTED TO KEEP IT STOCK AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE TO THE LOOK WHEN MY CAR LEFT THE FACTORY AND I PREFER LESS LIGHTS IN THR CABIN. I PREFER SINGLE DIN FOR NOSTALGIA AS I USED TO COMPETE IN SOUND OFF's IN THE 90's. I ALSO DON'T WANT TO RELOCATE THE CLIMATE CONTROL UNIT TO THE CENTRE CONSOLE. IT's NOT A DAILY DRIVER ANYMORE SO I DON'T NEED THE EASE OF USE OF A LARGE SCREEN.
HOPEFULLY, SOMEONE WILL CHIME IN SOON ON WHETHER IT's POSSIBLE?

This Single DIN Continental unit might be a better option for you if the PCCM isnt compatible and it looks great in the 996. Full video on it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpgQ9ZY5ugU

Looking at the Porsche page for the PCCM/+, it says this:

The PCCM and PCCM Plus are available from your Porsche Classic Partner or Porsche Centre. Associated map material is provided via an external SD card and can be ordered using the part number 99664250100 for Europe. The map material is not included in the scope of delivery for the PCCM and PCCM Plus.

Did the people on this thread who bought the head units then pay extra for the maps?
