Neutral gearbox detent spring

My gear stick has never self centred properly since I bought the car a year ago. I assumed the issue was worn out or sticking cables, so I decided to lubricate them to free them up and see if it improves matters.

The cables did benefit from being lubricated. However, I noticed that the neutral arm (not sure what it's called) on the gearbox would not self centre when operated with the cable end removed from it.

I can see the detent pin and spring sits above the arm, but it appears that unlike the gear selector detent pin, that it's contained by a metal plug, rather than a screw.

Is it serviceable from the top by removing the circlip? I hope the plug just pops out under spring pressure...

I heard that you had to service it from the inside, but that doesn't appear to be the case now I've researched it.

Looking at access, I think it may be possible to do in situ, but to keep the swear jar empty, maybe it's best to remove the gearbox. Also, does anyone know what the part number is? I can't find it listed in the catalogue.

Item number 22

Thanks

could be 996 303 255 00

I had a feeling that on some of these they are removed by putting a self tapper in it and pulling it out, but for God's sake get that confirmed by somebody who knows for sure as I could be completely wrong.

Thank you, MC.

I'll try OPC with that part number, I can't seem to get a definitive answer online.

I have found this in the workshop manual though which is what you are referring to. So it is a gearbox off job and it's definitely worth giving this a go before looking any deeper :)

Wow :o

Some great info in that thread though which is exactly what I needed.

I need to find a new spring, so I a hoping the MC's suggestion comes good, but I also need a new sealing cap and circlip.

I am 100% going to drop the gearbox to do it though!

Excellent, I just searched the part number you shared and found the diagram listing all 3 parts from USA/CANADA PET :)

A grand total of £2.45 for them.

That felt far too cheap for a phone call to Porsche, so I added a full set of mk1 side skirt fixings too. Rails, rails screws, clips and skirt screws for about £140 :o

I have started looking into clutch and flywheel replacements, seeing as I need to drop the gearbox. There's no evidence that mine has been changed in its 65k miles, so it seem appropriate to do it.

Where is the best place to get these and which brand is recommended?

I saw on autodoc have a Sachs clutch kit in stock at £228 and a LUK flywheel is on ebay for £384...

Should I stick with the same brand for both items? Also, if the flywheel is in spec, does it need to be replaced? I know a small amount of play is acceptable, but I would need to look up what the tolerance is.
