Need New Set of Tyres - What to Get?

:) Knew I was getting a little low on tyre tread & now confirmed with MOT failure on 3 tyres & 1 getting near. So, new set of tyres required. Currently been running Pirelli P Zero's - my local indy favours them as first choice. But now I have the chance to change all four - do I stick with Pirelli's (which have been absolutely fine) or change to a different brand. Interested to hear your thoughts.

I had to change my rears a few months back and opted for Michelin PS2's in the end but to be honest, I really don't think there is a lot to choose between the major players and it really comes down to where and with what brand you can get the best deal. I spent a couple of months researching and asking the same question as you and for every thumbs up you get for one brand another will give a thumbs down and vice-versa for another brand.
I found the best price at my local formula one auto centre who were actually cheaper, including fitting, then Camskills etc could supply only for. I was a little peeved though as I bought mine literally a day or two before Michelin announced the "free £50 fuel voucher" offer with 2 tyres which I know was still running a week or so ago so maybe worth investigating.

Thanks stolepotter. You are probably right. Also most of the main brands are roughly in the same price bracket. I find it hard to find cheaper than blackcircles - they will also deliver to your garage of choice.

Just checked and unfortunately, like me, you have just missed the "fuel voucher" offer, it expired on 31st July. It could have saved you £100 in fuel if you are buying 4 tyres.
Never the less, you should be in a good bargaining position with buying 4 so shop around and see who comes out tops - let us know where you get the best deal and with what brand.

I've just changed my rears from PZeros to PS2s and have found that the Michelins ride better, are quieter and are far better in the wet. A no-brainer based on my experience.

I never liked the Pirellis. Even when they were new-ish (put on by previous owner) I thought they were pretty substandard.

I got Porsche newcastle JCT to fit p zeros all round for 800 inc balance 100 point check and a mini valet 185 or 225( cant remember) front and 295 back

Yeah - same price as my indy quoted for p zeros. They basically will do it for the same price as blackcircles. I shall also get them to send the front brake calipers off for a re-paint at the same time as they are looking a little

"... better in the wet" doing what? A track day? Driving up the M1? Going round roundabouts?

Quite what is this 'better in the wet'? :)

Hi

I guess that he means relative to the P Zeros. I have fairly worn P Zeros on my 993, and in the dry they feel good. In the wet though they do not seem that great relative to my expectations, and in fact I got into a huge fishtail in the wet on a large (squareish) roundabout last week. I was going at a cheeky speed and expecting the car to drift a bit but it let go completely at the back. I actually pulled muscles in both shoulders I was twirling the steering wheel so fast. I was very lucky not to crash.

I will be buying a different brand of tyre next time myself.

Specifically, very poor when faced with standing water at motorway speeds.

Frankly, I suspect any wide profile tyre is going to have problems under those conditions, particularly when worn.

Sure. But the Pirellis were poor in those conditions from day 1. The PS2s seem unfazed in the same circumstances. Hence my comments.
