My first Porsche

So, yesterday we managed to get out in our 911s, despite the threat of rain later. The roads to Pickering and Whitby were sadly quite busy, this I don't mind but when you have a queue of 15 cars behind Mr Camper van or Ms blue rinse and nobody overtakes or leaves safe gaps it becomes a chore! There were some nice moments on the drive out - a little detour brought us close to some nibbling sheep at the side of the road and I had to shout 'F off Shaun' as one thought about crossing while we pootled slowly past, and my buddy trying to go up a farm entrance before realising his mistake.:ROFLMAO:

Parked up in Whitby near The Endeavour Pub, which thankfully says on the outside 'Bring your own fish & chips', handily there's a chippy next door, so we did and a nice pint to wash it down.

Suitably refreshed, we set off back, trying to plan a route a little off the main way back to avoid too much traffic, which was mostly successful, so when a safe opportunity rose, we played leapfrog.

I'm gelling well with it (as I thought I would), far quicker than my old M3, the feedback is far better, the controls much tighter and I really love the short shift! The car chunters and burbles a little if you tap the throttle while coasting, but rather quietly, it's not like these idiots with pop & bang maps that seem to have proliferated in our towns recently. I am also noticing that while the throttle isn't bad, the sport mode on my M3 was faster, especially for down shifting, so something to add soon.

As I said in the initial pick up post, the grip from the tyres is a fair bit more than my M3 on MPSS, It hasn't unstuck yet apart from a little lift off oversteer on a roundabout, not showing off, just finding limits and learning how it rotates and only when safe to do so.

Sadly, we didn't have time to swap DSC controllers, another time definitely, but when following over certain bumps, his appeared to 'nod' more? Maybe that's more a perception thing. However, with my dampers 'on' it was stiffer but not by too much. More exploration needed

Arriving back home to our local for a final pint and debrief, both fully enjoying the drive an me learning the car.

Interestingly, on the trip computer, he did 24mpg, while mine said 23mpg over 144 miles. No idea if that's because his is PDK, I'm a little eager to select a lower gear to enjoy the noise or different fuel (Jet super vs Tesco 99), probably a combination.

Anyway, I'm loving the car and looking at what bits I need to sort to put my stamp on it (centre grill mesh as it has the outers, sport button at some point, possibly swapping to Carrera Classics as Sport Design wheels aren't my favourite)

Cracking pair! 😎🍻

Great write up! Glad you’re enjoying the car (y)

First addition: Zunsport centre grill.

The car came with side grills already installed, although not Zunsport as they're installed behind the fins in the bumper. Being the time of year it is, even with the limited seat time I've had so far, there are a few leaves hiding in the lower corners of both radiators - bumper removal for a full clean out will be done soon, also allowing a condition check of the areas. Knowing this is a common issue, I ordered a centre grill yesterday morning. It arrived this afternoon, and I was in the mood to have a tinker.

The part is very well made and you can see why they're the #1 go to for this issue, regardless of car make. Not sure if you need to remove the plate and plinth, but it couldn't hurt for the extra access. Masking tape applied to the painted sides, the grill is easy to install, position it in both sides, and once happy apply a little extra pressure on one side and with a screwdriver through a hole near the locking tab push it to the side and release pressure. It locks in place and repeat the other side. Hey presto, no more leaves!

A much better fit than the current side grills, so I'll order them too to replace the imposters, when I'm in the mood for bumper removal.

Very quick delivery, well packaged, well made product, clear instructions, easy to fit. What more do you need? Colour me impressed...

Great thread, your car looks exactly like my 997.

The thing I notice about the 997 is how quickly you get used to them compared to newer 911s and the feel that you can throw them around like they’re toys. I also had a Caterham 420 and my 997 feels more chuckable, it’s so compliant and predictable.

The PSM is also great, you really can lean on it. With it off the car is still very predictable and slides are quite manageable but I still recommend keeping it on, even on track, unless you want to slide.

I think the 997 is likely to be remembered as probably the pick of the bunch, it’s such a well rounded car. My only complaint is the electrical niggles that come with owning a fairly sophisticated older car.

Brilliant choice though, definitely don’t be tempted to change up to anything newer in the future, they’re not better.

Long time since I was in Ivory Coast, I worked for a power gen company. After that it was Kenya. Exciting times and now you’ve got the 997 to look forward to on every rotation.
