My 930 thread

I drive my 997 like a tool most days on the way home from work, I wouldn't say it actually properly slides but it lets you know that you're taking liberties and because of the PSM and the massive mechanical grip from hot roads and tyres it's alway been a non event, it slips, catches and we just move on. There have been a couple of times that I've actually thought to myself that I wouldn't have gotten away with that in a lot of other cars I've had.

The 930 dramas that I've read about (or SC, 3.2, etc) tend to suggest that crashing comes as a bit of a surprise and one minute you're fine and then you're just a passenger as you spin into the nearest tree.

My Caterham (420R) was fairly notorious for biting people who don't give it the proper respect but I also found that very communicative, you knew when it was going, so hopefully the 930 won't be any worse, I'm not terrified of it, the last time I drove it I found it alright, no worse than something like my old Astra GTE that I spun out a few times back in the early 90's and certainly not the guaranteed murderer that some people claim, although the weight over the back will probably make it unrecoverable once it goes.

If it comes to Dubai then I'll definitely be taking it on the track to figure out where the limit is, strangely I struggled to get my 997 to move around much on the track, whereas on the road it seems to be more likely to squirm. On the UK roads in December I'll just be posing, with perhaps the odd little push if I'm really sure it's safe, but mainly posing and enjoying just being in it.

H, you'll be fine, just don't drive it like a male hen is all. No danger of driving around Stoke very fast anyway.... roads are awful, especially King Street / City Road that you'll have to navigate.

It's all changed since I lived there.
I literally had to follow Google Maps just to get off the D-road to King Street, then when I went to pick up my wheels I went from MLR to somewhere down near Derby way, but I realised I passed Longton and Blyth Bridge only when I realised I was near Tean, that new bypass road goes straight through now, I kept expecting to get to Broadway in Meir but missed it entirely.

Jeez, talk of exploring the limits, perhaps goes some way to explain why 911`s received bad press for decades as being too tail heavy..... OK, OK so I admit to exploring the limits a tad myself, so much so that I spun out on Duffus dip on Knockhill modifying the rear quarter on the tyrewall, while exploring the limits while suffering a degree of brain fade.....Harry, I too was a motorcyclist and I even rode in snow, thus I suspect you will have developed perhaps a tad more respect for road surfaces than perhaps those who`s skin may never have touched tarmac at speed, and suffered accordingly, thus I have a degree of confidence in terms of your first drive in your perfect Porsche....ENJOY..(-:

In the case of my self damaged 911, I carried out all the necessary repairs myself, but it felt a royal PITA to be doings so. I guess it may be a different story for those with enough wherewithal to have it repaired by craftsmen of their choosing, but there may well be a fair degree of frustration, unless money is no object whatsoever, and the machine thought to be replaceable...? Each to their own..

Interesting that the garage owner performing the task on your 930 has an iconic Porsche and seems not to use it much, and may have suggested that in time he could sell it at... the right price....?

When I bought my old crate, it too had been owned by the owner of garage/bodyshop who was well known in the marque community for the quality of his workmanship... I suspect if/when things may be quiet, it might be thought handy to have a project in the corner to keep busy with, and left to display the quality of one`s workmanship, which may be handy when prospective customers visit to seek advice etc..? Registering such a machine "privately" may have tax advantages in time..?

Also perhaps worth considering is that given the amount of one`s self and the effort put into creating one`s idea of perfection ( even as a garage owner) if and when driven on the road, every time a stone hits the underside or worse, chances are your enjoyment of your wonderful recreation risks being diminished somewhat, and if one adds possible reduction in value or extra work to resolve whatever issue arises, I guess some of the reasons can be understood how and why even those with the skill to create something close to perfection, might end up feeling more comfortable to just let it go...???

Of course there will ever be those really stretching to own their Porsche, indeed any Porsche, which will place limitations on their usage of it.... Been there done that over decades...perhaps a tad less so now, but still not up for driving it on salted roads as yet.... in time...???

The cost of things unfortunately is a factor for most of us that weren't born rich.

I bought my youngest a Rolex Submariner for his 18th, he immediately put it in the safe and didn't wear it, but after some time I saw him knocking about in it and now he never takes it off his wrist for anything. I asked him about it and he said he realised that he had to get past the mindset of worrying about the value, otherwise he'd never wear it and he wanted it to be about memories and something special to him over the years, so now it's got some scratches on and he's stopped worrying about it.
I'm pretty happy about it, hopefully when he's my age it will be a bit battered but it'll mean a lot more to him than the financial value of it.

I'm going to have to get out of the same mindset with the 930, I'm already thinking about not putting too many miles on it, but I'll have to stop, hopefully it becomes something I drive all over the place and in all weathers, it's been a lifelong dream to drive one and enjoy it, not just to own one in storage and fret over it's value.

I spoke to MLR earlier, it’s running and currently away having an AC conversion done so I can drive it in Dubai and not die of heat exhaustion. The OEM system isn’t brilliant and I obviously need some improvement. They know a specialist who can work a bit of magic and update it whilst keeping a lot of the original hardware so it’s not a full new installation.

He said it drives very well, the KWs have made a significant difference to the handling and it goes like a bat out of hell on boost with the 964 cams installed, but the fueling needs fine tweaking to iron out a bit of stutter pre-boost.

This is a downside of the old CIS system on these, especially after a top end rebuild and cams, apparently it’s a bit of a pain back and forth tweaking it, a lot of the USA guys just go EFI to do away with the faff of all this. I watched a YouTube video of a guy doing it and it looked like a proper old school series of back and forth adjustment to get it right, adjust one thing and it affects another, so you adjust that and go back to the start, etc.
Modern EFI makes things so easy, it adjusts itself, the CIS isn’t great but at least we’re not working with carbs and jets, I used to have to change the jets on my race bikes even if the temperature changed throughout the day.

Then it needs a full geo set-up and a final once over to make sure it’s all tickerty-boo and then they’re going to drop it up at my house.

I’ll be firing the old girl up on Friday morning and hopefully getting decent enough weather to get out and leave some burnt hydrocarbons around the Forest of Bowland.

The guys have pulled out all the stops to get this done to my timetable and hopefully it all comes together nicely.

I lost any interest in worrying about miles when the 3.2 clicked over to 229,000 miles 🤣 Somewhat remarkable for an engine that's never been apart 😲

Right, I'm all caught up. Might have to reserve judgement on the spoiler until it's seen in the flesh. There has been no mention of painting wheels so far. Phew.

I will be between Macclesfield and Ormskirk on Monday, so if I see you I'll flash . . . my lights.

If I didn't have men working here on Monday, I'd pop down to Macc and say gday

No we talked about the retrofit electric AC but it’s £5k and even though I was willing to spend it the guys convinced me to utilise the existing kit but with some sort of retrofit, I was knackered at this point and can’t remember the details.

I live in a little village about 20 mins northwest of Preston, colloquially known as Over Wyre. Fortunately my wife was born close by so they sort of accept us even though we’re not brother and sister and only have the normal amount of fingers and toes. It’s a local place for local people.

Saturday looks like a dry day so I’m hoping to get some miles done. If anyone fancies it I’ll be out and about around the Forest of Bowland area. I might do my old run up to Devils Bridge via Bullbeck and Hornby, we used to live in Lancaster so that was my usual Saturday/Sunday sprint, but I hear the average speed cameras are working now and I don’t fancy getting reamed.

"What's all this shouting.? We'll have no trouble here.... this is a local shop for local people."

I only ask because my 3.2 Carrera still has its original working AC system. The PO spent fortunes keeping it going over the years. I did a trip to Classic LM in it and it does do the job ikeeping you cold in a fashion although I’m not sure it would cope with Dubai heat !!
