Hello.

I've found an '86 844 with 120,000 miles on the car. I'm very familiar with Japanese cars but lack knowledge in how Porsches handle mileage.

I just wanted to know if i should stay away or if it should be fine. While i do realize that it depends greatly on the driver that put those miles on, im not about to go out and buy a Ford Focus with 100k miles on it. But i would consider purchasing an acura with over 100k miles on it.

The car is beautiful inside and out. I just wanted to know if it is typical for a Porsche transmission (its standard if that makes a difference), head gasket, wheel bearings, etc. to go after a certain number of miles.

Thanks alot.

Porsche in general can go on for many more miles than that, providing it had been maintained well. They are very well built both mechanically and body work. However, if things do go wrong it would be quite expensive to fix compared to a standard Ford/Honda. Good luck.

Hi,

Prior to 911 I had an 86 944 2.5. I got it with about 80k and used it daily, mostly for motorway driving. I can't remember anything going wrong - ever. Just needed usual tyres, service etc and very very important belts and chains renewal. If either goes it will total the motor.

Servicing wasn't massively expensive (have a look at JZ Machtech fixed menu), and the car was brilliant to drive - throw it into corners etc ... very well balanced indeed.

I think they are very well capable of high mileages, and mine went to new home with about 110k on it. As with anything though, they're getting older now, so the liklihood of work is increased. The possibility of one problem leading to another is also increased. I would say it largely depends on how the car has been driven/maintained and overall condition is paramount. Have a look at 911 porsche world this month with loads of info.

Just out of interest I got rid of mine because I eventually found it a bit dull - they're so well designed and put together they're very easy to drive. Excellent value for money now though.
