Mayonnaise in Oil filler tube

Hi I have not owned a 911 996 before and had this one for only a few months. This is a 1998 Tip model and covered less than 80K. Recently I have only completed short distances approx a total of 14 miles (7 miles each way). The temp gauge reaches just over the 40'. I have just noticed a white mayonnaise type deposit in the oil filler tube, along with moisture/watery evidence. I have just "tasted" the moisture deposit and I couldn't taste antifreeze. There is no oil in the coolant expansion tank. I am worried after all the well publicised cracked engine blocks etc. Could someone please also advise what should the idea running temp be as even on a long journey the needle only reaches 40' unless im stationary for a while.

small amount of mayo is normal....

The mayo is quite common and is a result of the way the filler tube goes, a search on here will give plenty of info.

The cars run at just over the 80 when warm, a low temperature thermostat helps get it a fraction closer to the 80.

They certainly don't run at 40. Mine take about 5-7 miles to get to full temperature.

You can check the oil temperature on the early ones via the temperature control in the centre console. GT4 has put a few posts on the subject, but searching for just his posts isn't much less than searching the whole site.

Many thanks for your help guys you have put my mind at rest!. Ref the low running temp on my car, what is the reason and what can I do about it please?
Oh I have another question ref wondering handling, but I will post a new thread for this.

I would suspect its most likely the thermostat that's failed open. Might as well replace it with the lower temperature one.

I had a low running temp problem which turned out to be the coolant valve on the tiptronic not closing owing to a vacuum problem. I would if I was you measure the actual temperature via the air con unit as mentioned in gt4's post. If its in the correct range then its probably the sender, if it really is low then I would take a look at the aforementioned coolant valve on the gearbox.

cheers

Just curious, but what makes you say it's the stat on the gearbox cooler as opposed to the main engine stat? Is the former a particular weak spot on these cars?

The low temp sounds like a sticky thermostat (in Tip heat exchanger), or dodgy temp sender.

Note: this is not the same thermostat mentioned above (the low temp stat option is in the engine block)

As for mayo, take a look here (996 FAQ):

And secret digital temp gauge (996 FAQ):

Thank you so very much for your help and the visual link ref "Mayonnaise"
it was a great help in identifying the issue. I must say with relief that it appears my "deposit" is quite normal. Thnak you again and everyone else.

Thanks every one for your most helpful advise, I shall keep you posted ref the low temp issue once further investigation has been carried out!

I call it the cream pie experience and you were brave to taste it!

re eca02apc comment. I went to the gearbox valve because i replaced the engine thermostat first as I assumed it was stuck open. It wasn't but I replaced it in any case.

cheers

More likely.
