Maintaining Battery Charge

Greetings!

Can anyone help please?

Last time I went on holiday I returned to find my 964 had a flat battery :-(
Someone mentioned that one of the key culprits for draining the battery was the analogue clock. Im due to go away again in a few weeks, and was thinking of taking the fuse for the clock out while im away. Do you think this will make any difference?

Hi Harry

Firstly check you don't need a new battery! Sounds obvious, but I once had one run it's charge down far enough to set the car alarm off while I was at work, draining the battery further until there wasn't enough juice to operate the central locking, making it impossible to get into the car to open the bonnet to turn off the alarm....aaaargh!

Otherwise buy a "trickle charger" such as the Battery Master by Draper. You can get them at Halfords and are not too expensive. You just connect it up and it will supposedly "maintain an optimum charge level" in the battery. I have just bought one for the winter and am hoping it will do the job. Only problem with a 911 is that you have to leave the front lid open which may upset your alarm/immobiliser and can only work if your car is in a secure garage.

Hi Harry,

I bought a Porsche charger that plus into the cig lighter socket which trickle charges and maintains the battery to optimum at all times. Makes alot of difference having a fully charged battery. I think this may only work on LHD 964's though as i beleive the RHD ones do not have a permanent live feed via the cig socket (ie key removed) which is obviously required. The charger wires will feed through the window which can then be closed and no effect on the alarm. A good buy from porsche at only £30! You dont say if you have a LDH or RHD but i think the above holds true.

Cheers

Giles.

I've heard the Porsche chargers are rubbish - too many fail and for a few more pounds you can get something more reliable - like the Battery Master. I've had mine for three years and leave it connected all the time when the car (a garage queen I confess!!) is in the garage.
