Loud ticking after fitting tandem pump

I'm pretty sure your hearing exhaust noise. To clarify where the noise is grab a spanner and press against the tandem pump to have a listen.

Great that you got it sorted out.

I tended to use a long bladed screwdriver with the handle pressed against my ear.... or if an awkward location and trying to differentiate sounds in a noisy engine bay, I use a length of tubing with one end at my ear and move the other end around the various components.as a means of gaining a better idea of issues.
The tube method is a left over from balancing carb set up`s in times past, by listening to the intake sound at the mouth of each intake... :)
