I know you have all been asked this 1000's of times but I am looking for a 911 3.2. I have a budget of £12 - £14k. Where is the best place in Kent ? As a first Porsche is this a good price to pay and what performance can I expect. My previous car was an E30 M3 what was fantastic. Will the Porker be faster ?

Where would you guy's suggest looking in Kent for purchase and servicing?

Hi Lee

£12 - £14k should get you a very nice Carrera 3.2 although obviously dealers are more expensive than buying privately. This is a good budget to give yourself for a 3.2. You should consider joining the Porsche Club Great Britain (PCGB) - for the cost of your membership (around £40 I think) you get a pretty good monthly magazine but more importantly for you a very extensive Classifieds. Also, cars advertised there have been owned by enthusiasts so perhaps will be of a better average condition than 911's at large. Anyway, something to think about.

Performance will probably be about on par with your old M3 although I don't have any experience of BMWs. From what I have read the view seems to be that they are both great cars but different. I guess you first test drive will tell you the answer to this one. Certainly don't expect a 3.2 to be much (if any) quicker. However, you can expect a more involving drive. Driving any 911 well is a long learning curve - this is one of the attractions of the model. If you want faster you could spend a few grand more and find a 911 3.3 Turbo. An 80's Turbo is a bit of a handful though and will be more expensive to look after than a 3.2

You could try Oakhills in Beckenham (spelling??). They specialise in LDH 964s but might give you something else to think about.

I concur with James's comment regarding buying a Porsche from a club member. My brother has been looking to buy an SC or 3.2 for a month or so and looked at about 10 cars, mostly with me along for moral support and to get grubby looking for oil leaks and rust. He was not a club member but I kept him aware of cars for sale in the Porsche Post, and we found the quality of those cars to be much higher than cars advertised elsewhere, usually with a full history and in better body, mechanical and interior condition. The prices of the quality cars was generally £2 - £3K higher, but in my opinion well worth it.

He decided quite early on to buy a 3.2 rather than an SC and after driving a 915 gearbox car bought a privately advertised RHD '87 Sport fitted with the G50 gearbox for around £14K. He only picked it up just this week and is well pleased.

I am in East Sussex and would be please to help if you feel you need any advice.
