Lock on fuel-lid not working

The lock/ solenoid for my fuel-lid (as in the metal hinged thing, and not the plastic cap) has stopped working. The metal pin remains retracted and does not deploy to lock the lid.

Is this a known problem, and is it easy to rectify? Seeing as the car has an extended O.P.C. warranty, should I encourage them to replace the locking mechanism instead?

Sounds like a seized fuel flap release rod or the petrol flap solenoid may be broken.

Start by spraying some WD-40 down the locking bolt channel (left side of petrol flap aperture and also via emergency release access side). Use the handy enxtension "straw" supplied by WD-40.

Alternate WD-40 with lock/unlock of the C/L until the bolt frees.

Let the first spray dwell for while to act on any obstruction.

The locking bolt channel is below/behind the rubber bung circled:

If that doesn't work, you will need either DIY or garage strip to access.

Thank you, GT4.

I need to take the car to my local O.P.C. next week, so I'll get them to have a look at this problem, too.

In case this happens in future, I shall defo try what you've suggested!

I might try that with mine which was stuck closed once I got to the garage for refuelling. Is it likely to be the same thing GT4?

With all that extra info, I am left with assuming "yes" :dont know:

Hi, I fixed what sounds like a similar problem with mine the other week - also a 997.2 - the flap on mine wasn't locking so doesn't help with the stuck locked problem later posted - I could hear the solenoid/actuator working though. Looking through the hole behind the rubber bung thingy in GT4's photo was just air and no rod. I have an OPC warrantee but couldn't be bothered with the whole organising time off work etc etc and possibly arguing the point on whether it is covered or not so after some searching found articles on Renlist or Renntech that explained how to go about removing the actuator so decided to give it a go myself. After removing the driver's side front wheel (RHD) then removing the arch liner, there is a large canister which once moved out of the way gives you somewhat awkward access to the actuator. In my case the plastic pin that locks the flap (but was still attached to the plastic emergency pull ring in the shut on the hinge side of the driver's door) had detached from the solenoid and was easily re-attached. All in and including a front wheel wash as well as a clean up of the detached arch liner (but not up to detailer's standards of course!) the whole process took me about an hour. If you decide to go for it I can point you in the right direction for other owners write ups and my suggestions for the Torx bolts that hold this actuator in.

Rich.

Sorry, should have mentioned the "ring-pull" (although it is in the handbook too):

If you have to open the fuel flap in an emergency (mechanism seized or died or the wiring has died etc etc), pull the emergency fuel flap release in the top of the door jamb (bottom of A-pillar).

Won't solve the issue (unless it partially unseizes, and you should lubricate anyway), but you can at least get more fuel in.

Many thanks to 'rkey' for your input/ guidance, and to 'GT4' for continuing to disseminate your pearls of knowledge.
