The other day I was out and sore that some guy’s number plate had fallen off his car and he had placed it on the front dash.

Now you probably can see where I’m going with this. I'm wondered how legal it would be to take my front number place off and relocate it to the dash?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think there's some construction regulation about the placement of the plate. Mind you the old Lotuses look cool with the stick on ones on the bonnet.

All registration marks including marks purchased through DVLA's sales scheme must be displayed in accordance with The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 (obtainable from Her Majesty's Stationery Office).

Rules for the display of number plates are set out in law, briefly these are: -

  • A number plate must be displayed at the front and rear of motor vehicles (with some exceptions).
[list:cbq3JEyxdO]Number Plates must be easy to read and meet the
    [u:cbq3JEyxdO]
    .
[list:cbq3JEyxdO]Lettering should be black on a white plate at the front and a yellow at the rear.
[list:cbq3JEyxdO]The background surface should be reflex-reflecting but the characters must not.
    [list:cbq3JEyxdO]There are separate requirements for
    [u:cbq3JEyxdO]
displayed on vehicles constructed before 1 January 1973.
[list:cbq3JEyxdO]Lettering and spacing must be of a set size. They must conform to one of the groups shown at:-
    [u:cbq3JEyxdO]
    or
    [u:cbq3JEyxdO]
    .

Well according to that you need to display it on the front of the car. So strickly speaking a dash mounted no. plate is not legal. I have a stick on front plate which is strickly speaking not legal either, but I've never been stopped because of it. I don't think the cops would be bothered unless I'm stopped for other reason and they decide to come down on me with every letter of the book!

My thoughts too.

Sigh, do you think sexyness counts as an exception?

no front plate visible, that will be enough for you to be stopped

I didn't put the link on myself (I'm not that clever) just copied and paste the page from:

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/regmarks/reg_marks_current_requirements.htm

I'm surprised they pulled you just for V1NC W, I mean, there're more important crimes to solve in this country, it's not as if it's way out! May be they were running low on crime no. for the mth and needed to bump the stat up a bit at the time!

Mick the police are a joke,

One of my staff was putting small directional signs on lamposts, to direct people to one of my stores, and policeman pulled over and demanded that he stop and take them all down.

1 hour later a riot van with 4 police officers in it arrived in the store to check that this had been done. And they havent even got the authority to demand this, as it is not a criminal offence.

3 days later, 2 young thugs robbed the same store, we phoned the police within 2 mins of the robery, telling them the reg number of the car, and also informing them that we had crystal clear images of the theft and the men that we could give them immiediately.

They said that they would be out straight away. 3 days later they turned up, with various excuses etc etc, to late then.

Now I bet you if I had phoned them and said that there was a car outside without a tax disc, somebody would have turned up within a few minutes.

Sorry to go off topic, rant over.

On my 993 I cut some off the width of the front number plate so that it was neat and did'nt overhang the mounting bracket.

The rules only state that you need a minimum of 11mm for the side margins, so if you only have a short number or a few narrow characters included and they are spaced correct, I think it must be alright to chop a bit off.

Just wait till they start issuing automatic tickets for mispaced number plates. The technology is now there (developed in the numberplate recognition software for the SPECS cameras) to automatically recognise illegal number plates as you pass a camera.

Oh and as none of us actually own our plates (in effect dval grant us a licence to use it but they still own it) they already have the power to withdraw a plate at any time.

Blimey!

Yup, they have the ability and technology to track us down and hunt us to death the minute we step 1mm outside of the traffic "law", but they haven't got a clue where the criminals and illiegal immigrants are and they don't have the structure to divert water, one one life's essential ingredients, from the excess to the needed, within the bleeming country!!! That's why I hate paying taxes, a wonderful country wasted by complete morons!

Simple law abiding people are easier to convict.

You have the car reg'd in your name

You have Insurance

Your home address is correct

Your show up to court

And your pay your fine
