... That is , in my original booklet!!

All full , new maintenance booklet ready to go from next Sept , thanks to the heads up from this great forum!

.. And now to the bones of the topic!

I drove the car back from my indie today, and I couldn't be happier.
The engine mounts have been changed and this has literally transformed the car.
I have to admit feeling a bit frustrated with my car this last year .. The gear changes haven't been quite as slick as I've remembered, she tended to bunny hop running along on idle in second (even after cleaning the ISV) and there were various noises , including a low frequency 'graunch' when moving off in first gear.
Well I'm shocked really that changing out the mounts has cured all of the above. I'm back in love!
Added to this , Bryan discovered a tiny air leak in my vacuum system that has sorted the varioram system , which has made a huge change in power delivery. It feels like virtually a new car .. No joke! I'll try to upload a pic later , it might be worth checking our cars for similar glitches.

I'd have to say , if you've got old engine mounts and have any of the above symptoms, it'd be well worth getting them changed .
I opted for C4 mounts , you can also go down the road of RS mounts, I'm more than happy with the C4 items.

The other job in hand at this service was to get the alternator changed out.
I'd been plagued by a grumble coming from the fan area. Last year I'd swapped the fan hub with no change. The alternator change has sorted the problem though. Interestingly enough , the was no discernible wear at the bearing once it was removed , but my indie showed me that the brushes were all but spent , so it was well worth getting the job done for this alone.

Along with full service , V belts , plugs , brake fluid , these cars don't get maintained on the cheap do they!!!

Hi B,

That all sounds positive stuff!! One question, when you say engine mounts, is this just the two towards the rear top, or have you had them all done? (I 'think' there are one or two others that are hard to get at towards the front of the engine)

Cheers,
Lig.

The nightmare never ends.

Glad you've still got your car Barney :thumb:

Please excuse a novice question that has no doubt been answered a thousand times but what does changing the engine mounts for C4 or RS parts do for a C2

Lig, I think there's three mounts but generally just the two rear mounts are changed, as with mine ...
Ed , the C4 mounts fit the C2 , are slightly stiffer, more hard wearing , and cheaper then the fluid filled C2 mounts its a no brainier.

Thanks Kim , still hanging in there .. Mounts and alternator have been quite a while in the planning .. With three kids under 12 there's always a more important hole for the readies!
Have you found a seller??

Here's a rather poor pic of where my vacuum leak was found ..
The general area is just under the left side of the varioram plenum.

The torch is shining on the connector that has a white band around it , that's a strap to hold it back in place, it had come adrift , and hung at an angle that caused the vacuum line to crack ...

Hi B, Glad you like your engine mount change :thumb: Still grinning after changing mine Saturday and enjoying the results yesterday :D

Great news B. I know what it's like to have a lighter wallet too having spent my future kids college fund with Bryan last month along with Windows's out preventative rustproofing  . Great to hear its all sorted now for winter 'cotton-wooling' :thumb: .

C4 mounts are stiffer than Carrera mounts as the C4 is heavier due to the 4WD components so stiffer mounts are needed to keep moving components in check. Although the RS is 1270kg (120kg lighter than a NB Carrera) stiffer mounts were needed here as it adds to overall rigidity and adds to road feedback. In essence its similar to having a firmer suspension set up and an aggressive geo. AFAIK the Carrera mounts are hydraulic, the C4 mounts are hydraulic with rubber bushings and the RS variant is all rubber which is much stiffer. You can get solid alloy items which are stiffer yet but thats something for dedicated track toys. I've gone with C4 items as I was looking for a happy medium.

The third mount (a metallastic bush at the front end of the gearbox housing) is not as highly stressed as the two rear hydrolastic mounts, so it doesn't need to be replaced as soon.
It is also more noticeable when the rear ones begin to sag, as it
(a) allows the power unit to live a life of its own when the car is being driven in a spirited manner and the driver notices it moving around more at the back of the car, to the detriment of the car's handling,
and
(b) the fact that the engine sags within the body is reputed to cause more drag in the gear shift mechanism due to its misalignment.
