It's a wrap...

I had to pop off on business somewhere so I didn't get the car back this weekend, it's being delivered tomorrow morning, so hopefully tomorrow afternoon I can pope don and get it inspected and signed off and then I'm back on the road.

In a nutshell for anyone interested, you submit the changes you want to the local police/traffic authority, they review it and give you a letter of no objection, you then get the car wrapped and then afterwards take it down for inspection to check that you've done exactly what they gave you permission for, then you get your Insurance to change the colour on their system, then everyone agrees that they're happy, the log book (which is actually like the American version credit car style car licence) and then if everyone is ok with it then you're away.

It's only a wrap but I'm a bit excited to see it because it's just a tiny shade different than my 996 build will be, so that will give us some idea of how the 996 will look.

From a few feet away it looks cracking, but up close it's probably the worst wrap that I've ever seen, it's already got a couple of stone chips and around some of the challenging parts they've bodged it, it's rough.

You genuinely can't tell unless you're 2-3ft away, but it really is crap, but it was a grand, a proper wrap here is 15-20k AED which is about £3-4k, so what can you expect for a quarter of that.
I'm not bothered really, it's my do-it-all hack and it looks ok at 60mph on the motorway :D

I thought I'd take a chance but that's a lesson learned, pay properly or don't do it, I'm glad it wasn't one of my better cars.

H, where did you get the sunstrip from....? Buy cheap buy twice as they say but it makes for an interesting combo of blue and red.

I got the sunstrip from a UK place after seeing someone else had one on a FB group.
I didn't know if it would look rubbish, it is a bit 'Barry Boy' but I like it and more than that really it does its job very well with the low winter sun here which is terrible.

Tbh, I’ve seen Topaz wraps that deteriorate over a few months, if you don’t get stone chips, then the door handles start to show wear if you’re really not careful..

I hope they haven’t damaged the paintwork underneath with their scalpels, as the cheap wrapping companies are notorious for doing that.

It’s dreadful, plus going to work this morning an airbag light came on, so they’ve disturbed something.

I called them and they said bring it straight back. I made it known that I could cause them some drama if it wasn’t put right and they said they’re going to pay another company to make it right and redo it all.

Hopefully it comes back better, I’m not holding my breath for a top notch job, but it’s a valuable lesson, I should have listened to people, wraps are crap.

Harry, crap wraps are crap..... and cheap.... some are stunning but as you recognise, expensive.

As I said, from a car length away it looks brilliant, loads of people came over at work and said what an amazing new car it was and how much better it was than my old silver car - when I said it was a wrap they were all amazed it was the same car (except one guy who is a car guy and knew what it was).
In fact even my own son was massively taken with it and wanted to use it at the weekend to impress a bird, whereas he usually prefers my wife's 4x4.

So to be fair it does look great at a glance.
But once you properly look then it's naff and it's a right pigs ear.

The concept of wraps is brilliant, for £5k (for a proper one allegedly) you get a new exterior look and as demonstrated this morning most people think you've got a new motor, and more importantly YOU feel like you're in a new motor.

But there is too much to go wrong and I think it's probably better to just buy the colour you really want and you're happy to keep it forever.

I'm not really moaning....well I am, but it's not that bad, first world problems and all that....I'm glad I did it, I learned a lesson from it.

Someone’s just wrapped my old orange STO matt black, he’s done it over the PPF and also done all the interior door jams etc. It must have been a very expensive job imo. I dread to think what it’ll look like in a few months time.. 😬😱

My gaffer had his black Gallardo wrapped in Lambo orange...... did a great job .

I'd have probably been singing a different tune if they'd have done a spectacular job of it, but unless these guys totally redeem themselves and really turn my opinion around then I don't think I'd bother again wrapping a motor.

I've sometimes thought that it might be worth priming and/or smoothing off a really nasty paint job and then covering it with a wrap that lasts for years, an example would be the Minerva Blue 930 I saw that was gorgeous but the paint was awful, but if a really good wrap is as expensive a a proper paint job then why bother.
