Is this the right price for a 993 Targa?

I've had a brain wave. The Porsche that might be all things for me is called a 993 Targa and a Saab 93 as a second car! So I am seeing a 993 C2 Targa tomorrow that seems to be the spec I want, silver, black leather, air con, power steering, abs, electric seats, 17" alloys, computer, sound pack, full Porsche service history, 70,000, 1996N for £26,995 - is this a good price? It seems ok. I like that fact that it has 17" alloys as the ride will be less harsh - is that bad for resale? Thoughts? Cheers Dominic

Sounds good to me.
17 inch Targa wheels are standard - which is good for resale! In any case you can get a set of other Porsche wheels for 400 quid if you want them.

Sounds the right price. but dont forget to get a PPI to check it out. Also try and see it during/after a heavy rain downfall, as these roofs are prone to leaks.

Pardon?

Cridfords were selling what seemed to be a nice RHD 993 Targa at 26995 with 70K on the clock. It was supposedly sold but it was back on their web site the other day. I thought it was a surpiringly realistic price.

Hi Guys, yes the car was at Cridfords but the car is now sold and due to be collected. I spent a very pleasant morning at Pentagon, very nice people and free apple juice. Drove a 996 C4 cab, 993 coupe tiptronic and 993 targa tiptronic. The targa was superb and I had two drives in it but at £30k with 85k miles it seems too expensive - they were also very conservative on part ex bidding £3k less than an independant PC and OPC.

The surprise was that despite everyones comments about it being un refined, maybe not good for long motorway journeys, a bit harsh etc I found it to be most pleasant and less harsh than the 996 (on 18" wheels) on the same road.

I am going to see three more 993 targas on Monday. One at £33k with 50k miles, another at £35k with 20k miles and another under £30k with 50k miles.

I would like to ask why it has taken some poeple so long to find a good 993. Was it the spec that was important, the colour combination or just finding one that passed the PPI well? If the Peter Morgan's PPI uncovers problems but he says still buy if the dealer will fix and I get a three year warranty then surely all is well? I am asking in case I am missing something.

Thanks again

Dominic

I'm with you Dominic, although not prolific, there are enough 996 and 993 Targas out there if you have the funds. Mind you, half the pleasure of buying a Porsche is the looking. It also seems that a lot of dealers are still asking premium money. Why can Cridfords sell a car at £27K when some dealers are offering similar cars for up to £9K more?

My only reservation about the 996 Targa would be that it probably still has some depreciation in it given most 996's seem to be asking around the £45K mark.

They are two different cars in all but the roof, but you get the benefit of a hatch on the 996.

The problem with large wheels is one that has appeared here in other threads. Low profile and run flat tyres especially, have low and reinforced side walls, so there isn't much rubber to absorb some of the shocks.

The 993 would probably have been on 17" wheels and I am told this makes quite a difference.

A similar example is BMW where so many buyers opt for sports suspension and larger diameter tyres. Until recently, it seemed to be a common cricitism that ride was just too firm and irritatiing. However, if the press are to be believed, BMW have cured this with the latest generation of run flat tyres. The strange thing is that, from memory, I recall noticing that the latest 3 series was fitted with Bridgstone run flats rather than Continentals.

I haven't owned either a 993 or 996 but from my knowledge of friends cars, the 996 is a different experience. You pays your money and makes your choice. Personally, I think the modern Targa makes a lot of sense.

Hi Anthony, sorry that I did not point out clearly enough that I am only interested in a 993 and not a 996. The 996s that I have driven were fine cars but a little lacking in character for me and they had a harsher ride than the 993s, and they were just too much like being in my Boxster! Funny, I started out looking for a newer Boxster, got tempted by a 996 C4 cab but will buy a 993 Targa, hopefully soon! Dominic

Dominic,

I was in the market for a Boxster / 911 last year and having tried a new M3 and 996 C4 felt they offered a better experience than my V6 4motion Golf, but still weren't special. I really liked the Boxster although I felt the 996 was a more 'serious' (less fun) car - 100 MPH was just too easy!!

So to a 993 - saw quite a few. Really different experience. Chose a Cab as it's a summer car (so why have tin top with speed cameras everywhere?). 993 targas - great but seemed to have less headroon for the kids in the back - and seemed to be the most expensive 993's. £30K to £35K was, last year, the price really nice cars were going for. Lesser money brought up cars with 80K, 8 owners & panels that didn't fit properly!!! Make your own mind up?

So, to answer your question - a good choice, get one if you see a good one. Mine got serviced & MOT'd today ~£400 at local OPC - that's it another year's motoring, not bad for a 'supercar'. It seems as time goes by the really clean / nice ones get fewer and far between. Enjoy...and hang onto it.

Dominic,

Glad you've seen the light! Very interested in your comments as I also have a '96 RHD 993 Targa on 17's. Has a great ride, but it still a very accomplished handler. I've read somewhere that the Targas had slightly softer suspension than the Coupes, but then I've been told by a specialist that the settings are the same so I dunno. Anyone?

Those cars seem pretty spot on price-wise if from a dealer with copper bottomed pedigree. There seems to be more interest now in Targas.

Robert.
