I wandered into my local OPC (Mid-Sussex) last weekend, to have a look at some cars. Regular readers may remember that I'm at the start of a search for soemthing to replace my 993 C2.

There were only half a dozen other people on the whole huge showroom. I introduced myself at the reception desk, saying I was looking to buy a car. Almost half an hour I spent peering into the windows of locked vehicles. No-one -- but no-one -- showed the slightest interest in speaking to me.

In the end I walked out, slowly, and still no-one asked if I needed help. What is it with these people? Don't they want to sell cars?

I'll go talk to someone else next time...

Judging by threads on other forums regarding all sorts of dealers, it was just another typical day in the life of a showroom. After all, what are you looking to spend? £30K, £40K? Don't want you in the showroom. You'll interrupt Kevin's Little Britain impersonations.

Next time, go up to him and say "want that one". Then when he gets the keys out say "computer says no" and walk out.

Incredible. Though may be not...

I couldn't have resisted asking to see someone - preferably the MD/dealer principal - and saying to him/her that they appear not to give a sh*t whether they sell me a car or not. I'd have been genuinely interested in the reply. And what happened next!

Go to Hatfield Porsche, great people and service.

Just the right amount of attention without being pushy! Not a trace of arrogance

Gave my kids hot chocolate, my wife flowers and for me a brand new 997 C2s !

Deja Vue for me there Manek!! About a year ago I went into Porsche Chiswick on my way home. Offered a drink by smiley, friendly receptionist and need to wait for Fred (or whoever) - he is busy with a client (sic.).

Looked at everything, sat in everything, 30 minutes later walked slowly out, receptionist sid sorry about the wait I said no problem. Last time I ever go there unless I need a GT. (I will probably rather go to RSJ for their one though!!)

Sounds like Mid-Sussex is worth a trip just for an eyeul of Reception... I'm sure I can find the time this week...

Went in OPC Reading with my F355 saying I was interested in doing a deal on a 996 Targa in the showroom. Still waiting for the "sales"man to call me back with the figures...

On the plus side, I saved £30k by buying a 993 Targa instead which is just as much fun!

I must confess, every time I consider doing business with a flash main dealer, I look around and think how much mark-up there is in the car I am considering to pay for the granite floors, leather seats, cappucinos and cute receptionists...

Robert.

Robert, I want to ask you what your principal resons were for going from 355 - 993?? Have you found any negatives about the change or do you have any regrets?

If only I were in a position to have this car from Autotrader now:

2002 PORSCHE 911 2dr Coupe

That's the one I want...

What is your budget? I know someone who got a similar car, but a 53 plate with less miles, for £43k...

Thanks Noony, but it's just going to have to wait until May...

Of course, Manek was considering spending quite a few £K at the OPC. Didn't they want his money? Well not necessarily his money. Anyone's would do. And if they didn't sell a car to Manek, some other punter would come in and have it.

Easy money. Not hungry enough to care.
