Hello, i'm new to this site, and I don't own a porsche, it's my dad who's asked me to join and ask a few questions. I'll say now, I don't have the slighest clue about porsche engines, i.e. whats hot and whats not, thats why I'm here. 1. CDA BMC enclosed induction. I've got one on my saxo engine, bit off topic, but thats where I've heard of them. They seem to be one of the best on the market within the engines I've come across. I know nothing about porsche engines. Could you advise me on the best enclosed induction kit on the market, and if the BMC is as good, or fits the engine for that matter. 2. exhaust. I am quite shocked at the price I've seen in one of my dad's porsche books for a performance exhaust, considering it is so small compared to a normal front engined car's. is the extra costs made up through the fabrication, as bending the pipes in such a small space may be costly ? Basically, my dad wants a performance exhaust, I would have thought a performance manifold, a sports, or de-cat, and performance back box are on the agenda, but again I'm not sure. 3. do you go down the cams, port/polish and remap route, or are the porsche heads and cams performance enough already ? thanks if you can give me anything on these, sorry about all the questions as well. lloyd emery

although you don't mention what car you have, which would be useful !

easy & quick answers 1st to q's 1 & 3

1. apart from a sports performance air box very little is gained from the BMC or K&N versions.... what you have to realise is that these mechanics as ALREADY MAXIMISED ! nothing wrong with BMC or K&N but the gains are minimal to near zero....

mass production cars are a compromise which is why you get get so much extra out of them.... saxo, tt, etc

3. Leave the engine as it is... again it's already max'ed, that's why it is a Porsche ! there are remaps you can do, but the gains are only 2-5% unless you have a Turbo.. depends on what car you have,...

as for no.2 that would depend on what car you have.. but as it's a Porsche exhausts are all very special so forget what's mass production prices... as with a supercar comes super car prices !

Oh yes sorry mate. Its a 996 Carrera 4 on a W-plate.

Yea I sort of had the idea porsche engine would be tuned to a certain extent already, and what you've said makes sense. Thanks for the help mate.

Lloyd

For the money your father would have to spend to get a noticeable power increase

A porsche sports exhaust sounds fantastic

He'd be better off spending the money on buying a GT3

The only readily-available and meaningful way to get more power from the 996 (excluding the very expensive but effective factory power kit) is to fit extractor exhaust manifolds, together with matching low-back-pressure silencers. For these mods to work, you will need a modified ECU map as the altered volumetric efficiency of the engine at various rpms will require different fuelling and ignition timing. Without the modified ECU, extractor manifolds will normally make the engine run worse as it will be wrongly fuelled and wrongly timed by the standard map.

It is therefore important to get a matched set of parts designed to work together - where the mapping has been developed to work wih the modified exhausts. One that springs to mind is the TechArt kit (See
www.techart.de
for details and speak to Tech-9,
www.tech9.ms
who are the UK distibutor). Their kit comprises manifolds, silencers, tailpipes, ECU and BMC (I think) air-filter. Good for about 20-25 real horsepower I understand, but still expensive in terms of £/BHP. A similar matched set of components is available from Fabspeed (www.fabspeed.com) but with a more substantially modified airbox. The combination of Fabspeed silencers and airbox on my previous Porsche ('99 C4) did make a difference. Not massive, but sufficient to be noticeable. I would expect that manifolds and ECU wiould add more to the party.

As for BMC / K&N filters, I agree with Sundeep - on their own they offer little improvement, however with other mods they can come into their own as they are capable of flowing more air (and for longer as they dont seem to 'go off' as quickly as they get dirty) than standard.

Hope this helps.

Ian W
